Blue Whiting Survey: Weersverbetering

In de nacht van vrijdag 22 maart op zaterdag 23 maart blijven we steken vlak voor het westelijke uiteinde van het 53.07N transect als gevolg van de wind (WNW 9). In de loop van de ochtend neemt de wind iets af en varen we langzaam naar het noorden, naar het beginpunt van het volgende transect (53.41.07N-16.00.00). Om 13.13 UTC draaien we naar het oosten. Met de afgenomen wind in de rug ligt het schip een stuk rustiger.

During the night of Friday 22 March to Saturday 23 March we get stuck just before the western end of the 53.07N transect due to the wind (WNW 9). During the morning the wind decreases slightly and we slowly sail north, to the starting point of the next transect (53.41.07N-16.00.00). At 13.13 UTC we turn east. With the reduced wind at the back, the ship is a lot calmer.

Dit onderzoek heeft tot doel om een bestandschatting te maken van de blauwe wijting die rond deze tijd bij Porcupine Bank, Rockall Bank en de rand van het continentale plat komt om te paaien. Het gebied is groot, daarom doen we dit onderzoek met vijf schepen van verschillende landen tegelijk. De blauwe wijting kan zich snel verplaatsen. Om ervoor te zorgen dat we de vis niet mislopen of dubbel tellen, moeten we met alle schepen tegelijk zo snel mogelijk in een richting het gebied bestrijken. Op het kaartje kun je zien hoe onze planning eruit ziet. Het Spaanse schip, de Vizconde de Eza, was al eerder in het gebied en heeft inmiddels het zuidelijke deel gedaan (blauwe transecten). De Tridens (oranje transecten) heeft 6 transecten in het zuiden bijna af en het Ierse schip, de Celtic Explorer (groene transecten), heeft in hetzelfde gebied ook 2 transecten gedaan. De Celtic Explorer heeft de afgelopen twee dagen geschuild in een baai langs de Ierse kust en gaat morgenochtend beginnen aan het groene zigzag-transect. Het Noorse schip, de Vendla is de afgelopen dagen in de storm vanuit Noorwegen hierheen gevaren en gaat morgenochtend vroeg beginnen aan het het rode transect. Het Faroese schip, de Jakup Sverri, vertrekt vannacht uit Thorshavn in de richting van het gebied om te beginnen aan het gele transect. Hoewel alle schepen wat vertraging hebben opgelopen door de storm, lopen we nog wel mooi synchroon met elkaar.

The aim of this research is to provide a stock estimate of the blue whiting that come to Porcupine Bank, Rockall Bank and the edge of the continental shelf to spawn around this time. The area is large, which is why we are conducting this research with five ships from different countries at the same time. The blue whiting can move quickly. To ensure that we do not miss or double count the fish, we must cover the area with all ships simultaneously in one direction as quickly as possible. On the map you can see what our planning looks like. The Spanish ship, the Vizconde de Eza, had already been in the area before and has now completed the southern part (blue transects). The Tridens (orange transects) has 6 transects almost completed in the south and the Irish ship, the Celtic Explorer (green transects), has also completed 2 transects in the same area. The Celtic Explorer has been sheltering in a bay along the Irish coast for the past two days and will start the green zigzag transect tomorrow morning. The Norwegian ship, the Vendla, has sailed here from Norway during the storm in recent days and will start the red transect early tomorrow morning. The Faroese ship, the Jakup Sverri, will leave Thorshavn tonight towards the area to start the yellow transect. Although all ships have been slightly delayed by the storm, we are still in good sync with each other.

Om 20:00 UTC komen we bij de westkant van de Porcupine Bank, met blauwe wijting op het echogram. Om 20:50 UTC stoppen we om te vissen (trek 5). Dit is de eerste trek tijdens deze reis die we uitvoeren in het donker. Vis heeft de gewoonte om in het donker los te komen van de bodem en verspreid te gaan zwemmen in de waterkolom. Daarom verwachten we dit keer wat meer soorten in de vangst.

At 20:00 UTC we arrive at the west side of the Porcupine Bank, with blue whiting on the echogram. At 20:50 UTC we stop to fish (haul 5). This is the first haul during this trip that we perform in the dark. Fish have the habit of breaking away from the bottom in the dark and swimming in the water column. That is why we expect more species in the catch this time.
