Blauwe wijting aan de westkant van Rockall Bank - Blue whiting at the western rim of Rockall Bank

In de nacht van 29 naar 30 maart, varen we over de Rockall Bank. Wanneer we op de Bank zijn, verschijnt op het echogram een dun laagje vis stijf op de bodem. Dit laagje wordt steeds dikker naarmate we dichter bij de oostrand van de bank komen.  De volgende ochtend, donderdag 30 april 2023, zetten we het net uit om 9:00 voor trek 6. We weten dit keer niet wat de vangst zal zijn. Twee jaar geleden toen we op dergelijke echo's visten, vingen we grauwe poon (2021, trek 11) en vorig jaar was het blauwe wijting gemengd met zilverkabeljauw (2022, trek 13). Na het halen van het net blijkt dat de vangst bestaat uit blauwe wijting.

On the night of 29 to 30 March, we sail across the Rockall Bank. When we are on the bank, the echogram shows a thin layer of fish stiff on the bottom. This layer gets thicker as we get closer to the eastern edge of the bank. The next morning, Thursday, 30 April, 2023, we shoot the net at 9:00 for haul 6. We don't know what the catch will be this time. Two years ago when we fished for such echoes we caught grey gurnard (2021, haul 11) and last year it was blue whiting mixed with silvery pout (2022, haul13). After hauling of the net it appears that he catch consists of blue whiting.

Raadsel. In de vangst zit ook 6 kg van een andere soort vis. Tussen de blauwe wijting op deze foto, zit een andere vis. Kun je hem vinden? En: wat voor soort is het? - Puzzle. Na trek 6 varen we verder naar het oosten. Af en toe  zien we tussen de 400 en 500 meter een school blauwe wijting. Wanneer de afstand tussen de scholen ongeveer 1 mijl is, besluiten we om een pogen te wagen en te kijken of we hier een vismonster van kunnen verzamelen. Na CTD-opname 14 om 17:15 UTC zetten we het net uit (trek 7) en proberen een van de scholen op te pikken met de sonar.

After haul 6 we sail further east. Occasionally we see a school of blue whiting between 400 and 500 meters. When the distance between the schools is about 1 mile we decide to give it a go and see if we can collect a fish sample from this. After CTD recording 14 at 17:15 UTC, we shoot the net (haul 7) and try to pick up one of the schools with the sonar.

De bemanning slaagt erin om wat blauwe wijting te vangen. Om 19:30 UTC varen we op het transect verder in oostelijke richting. - The crew manages to catch some blue whiting. At 19:30 UTC we proceed on the transect in eastern direction.

De blauwe wijting worden gesorteerd op lengte. Hiervan wordt een representatief monster 100 exemplaren genomen. Van deze vissen worden lengte, gewicht en geslachtsrijpheid bepaald. De otolieten (gehoorsteentjes) worden verzameld om later de leeftijd af te lezen. - The blue whiting is sorted by length. A representative sample of 100 specimens is taken from this. The length, weight and sexual maturity of these fish are determined. The otoliths (ear stones) are collected to read the age later.

Woensdag 29 maart 2023. Nadat we, varende op het 55.30N transect naar het westen, geen blauwe wijting hebben gezien, besluiten we om een diepe trek te doen ten westen van Rockall Bank. Om 5:19 UTC zetten we uit voor trek 5 en vissen in de schemering vlak boven de bodem op 900m. De vangst bestaat uit enkele manden meso pelagische vis en inktvis. Het kost ons de hele dag om de vangst uit te zoeken en de soorten vast te stellen.

Wednesday, March 29, 2023. After not seeing any blue whiting while sailing on the 55.30N transect to the west, we decide to do a deep haul west of Rockall Bank. At 5:19 UTC we set out for haul 5 and fish at dawn just above the bottom at 900m. The catch consists of several baskets of meso pelagic fish and squid. It takes us all day to sort out the catch and identify the species.

Tijdens trek 5, zien we enkele Russische trawlers. We roepen ze op over de radio en vragen waar ze op vissen: ze zijn op zoek naar blauwe wijting. De Russische trawlers mogen niet binnen de 200 mijlszone vissen en moeten dus wachten en hopen dat de blauwe wijting hier op duikt. - During haul 5, we see some Russian trawlers. Een bladschubzwelghaai (Centrophorus squamosus) en een zevenarmige octopus (Haliphron atlanticus). Het kleine witte armpje is de achtste arm die hij verborgen houdt in de mantel. De pijlinktvissoort Brachioteuthis riisei - The squid species Brachioteuthis riisei

Exemplaren van twee algemeen voorkomende lantaarnvissen die erg veel op elkaar lijken. Links Symbolophorus veranii, rechts Myctophum punctatum. Ze kunnen worden onderscheiden aan de hand van het aantal kieuwboogaanhangsels. Wanneer beide soorten in de vangst zitten, valt op dat bij Myctophum wat meer pigment op de door de vangst ontvelde huid blijft zitten. - Specimens of two common lanternfish that look very similar. Left Symbolophorus veranii, right Myctophum punctatum. They can be distinguished by the number of gill arch appendages. When both species are in the catch, it is noticeable that Myctophum retains a little more pigment on the skin that has been peeled off by the catch.

Een zuidelijke bijlvissoort die we niet vaak vangen: Sternoptyx diaphana. - A southern hatchet fish species that we don't often catch: Sternoptyx diaphana. 

Tijdens het uitzoeken van trek 5, draaien we om 10:30 UTC op 55.30N-18.00W naar het noorden en om 17:07 UTC op 56.38N-18.00W weer naar het oosten, richting Rockall Bank. 'Savonds langs de westrand - en op Rockall zelf, zien we nog steeds geen echo's van blauwe wijting of andere vis op het echogram. 

While sorting out haul 5, we turn north at 10:30 UTC at 55.30N-18.00W and east again at 17:07 UTC at 56.38N-18.00W, towards Rockall Bank. At night along the west rim and on Rockall itself, we still don't see echoes of blue whiting or other fish on the echogram.

Nadat we op maandag 27 maart zijn begonnen aan het 54.56N transect naar het westen, komen we in de namiddag bij de rand van het continentale plat. Hier zien we veel blauwe wijting op het echogram. We varen een stukje door en stoppen om te vissen op een laag op bijna 700m diepte om 15:30 UTC. We maken er een heel korte trek van, om te voorkomen dat de vangst te groot wordt. De vangst bestaat blauwe wijting.

After beginning the 54.56N transect to the west on Monday, March 27, we reach the edge of the continental shelf in the afternoon. Here we see a lot of blue whiting on the echogram. We sail a bit and stop to fish at a depth of almost 700m at 15:30 UTC. We make it a very short haul, to prevent the catch from getting too big. The catch consists of blue whiting.

Om 17:19 UTC varen we verder. Omdat we slecht weer verwachten en na twee uur nog steeds veel blauwe wijting zien, besluiten we te vissen om toch nog een monster blauwe wijting te verzamelen voordat de wind toeneemt. Om 19:30 UTC op 54.56N-11.03W beginnen we met het uitzetten van het net, maar op het moment dat we de vislijnen willen laten vieren, valt de verbinding met de trawlsonar weg. Hierdoor zijn we gedwongen om deze trek af te breken. Er zit een breuk in de kabel die eerst gerepareerd moet worden. De komende 12 uur kunnen we niet vissen.

At 17:19 UTC we sail on. Because we expect bad weather and still see a lot of blue whiting after two hours, we decide to fish to collect another sample of blue whiting before the wind picks up. At 19:30 UTC on 54.56N-11.03W we start to set the net, but the moment we want to let go of the fishing lines, the connection with the trawl sonar is lost. Because of this we are forced to abort this haul. There is a break in the cable that must be repaired first. We can't fish for the next 12 hours.

While the wind is getting stronger, with waves up to 8m high, we sail through the night. The next morning at 9:16 UTC at 54.16N-14.16W we turn northeast and at 13:34 UTC at 55.30N-13:24W we turn west on a new transect. The wind decreases during the day. We could fish again, but there is no blue whiting on the echogram.

Blauwe wijting op Porcupine Bank - Blue whiting on Porcupine Bank

Op vrijdag 24 maart verlaten we on plek aan de kade langs de rivier de Lee in de haven van Cork. Omdat we veel tijd hebben verloren als gevolg van het slechte weer, hebben we in overleg met onze internationale partners besloten om de vier zuidelijkste transecten niet te doen: het Spaanse onderzoekschip Visconde de Eza heeft dit gebied al eerder onderzocht, waardoor de schade aan het onderzoek meevalt.

On Friday 24th March we leave our spot on the quayside along the River Lee in Cork Harbour. Having lost a lot of time due to the bad weather, we have decided, in consultation with our international partners, not to do the four southernmost transects: the Spanish research vessel Visconde de Eza has already explored this area before, so the damage to the research not too bad.

We have a 230 mile cruise ahead of us. The wind force on the way to the starting point varies from west-southwest 7 to 10 Beaufort, which means that it is not possible to sail quickly. We zetten het net uit voor trek 1. De vangst bestaat uit blauwe wijting met 3% evervis. Hier bovenop Porcupine Bank is het 200m diep. Het is niet gebruikelijk dat blauwe wijting zo ondiep wordt aangetroffen. Normaal gesproken zien we blauwe wijting in een laag op ongeveer 450m lang de rand van het continentale plat en verder naar het westen in de oceaan waar het kilometers diep is.

We shoot the net for haul 1. The catch consists of blue whiting with 3% boarfish. Here on top of Porcupine Bank it is 200m deep. It is not common for blue whiting to be found so shallow. Normally we see blue whiting in a layer about 450m long at the edge of the continental shelf and further west in the ocean where it is kilometers deep.

Om 15:59 UTC stoppen we voor een CTD-opname. In de regel laten we de CTD-meetsonde zakken tot 1000m diepte, maar op deze locatie 52.55N-14.19W op Porcupine Bank is het slechts 300m diep.

Superspiering - Super smelt

Om middernacht in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag 26 maart varen we in westelijke richting over de rand van het continentale plat. Zoals verwacht, zit er blauwe wijting aan de grond. We vissen hierop tijdens trek 2. De vangst bestaat uit blauwe wijting en ongeveer 10% grote zilversmelt. Grote zilversmelt heeft wel wat weg van een heel grote spiering: een superspiering met grote ogen en grote schubben. Volwassen zilversmelt is ongeveer 40cm groot en kan tientallen jaren oud worden.

At midnight from Saturday to Sunday, March 26, we sail west across the edge of the continental shelf. As expected, there is blue whiting at the bottom. We fish for this during haul 2. The catch consists of blue whiting with about 10% large silver smelt. Large silver smelt looks a bit like a very large smelt: a super smelt with large eyes and large scales. Mature silver smelt is about 40cm in size and can live for decades.

Om 2:43 UTC varen we verder in westelijke richting. We zien geen blauwe wijting meer op het echogram. Om 8:23 UTC op 52.56N-16.00W varen we noordwaarts naar het volgende transect. Om 12:10 UTC op 53.29N-16.01W draaien we naar het oosten op het nieuwe transect. Wanneer we bij de rand van de bank komen, - bij het North West Porcupine Bank, een gebied met beschermde status - zien we grote concentraties blauwe wijting. We vissen hier op (trek 3), om een monster te verzamelen voor het bepalen van lengte, gewicht, leeftijd en paairijpheid.

At 2:43 UTC we continue sailing in a westerly direction. We no longer see blue whiting on the echogram. At 8:23 UTC at 52.56N-16.00W we head north in the direction of the next transect. At 12:10 UTC at 53.29N-16.01W we turn east on the new transect. When we get to the edge of the bank - at North West Porcupine Bank, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) - we see large concentrations of blue whiting. We fish for this (haul 3), to collect a sample to determine length, weight, age and maturity.

Tijdens het uitzetten van het net tijdens trek 3, zien we een mooie zonsondergang. Dat belooft niet veel goeds voor het weer in de komende dagen. - While shooting the net during haul 3, we see a beautiful sunset. That does not bode well for the weather in the coming days.

Na trek 3 varen we het transect af tot 53.29.68N-13.31.62N (23:27 UTC) op het topje van Porcupine Bank. Vanaf daar stomen we 's nachts en tot 13.41 UTC op maandag 27 maart, naar het beginpunt van het volgende transect op 54.55.46N-10.03.29W en varen in westelijke richting. Onderweg zien we veel echo's van blauwe wijting, maar we doen daar niets mee, omdat dit geen transect is en omdat we weten dat het Noorse schip, de "Vendla", dit deel van het gebied al heeft onderzocht.

After haul 3 we sail down the transect to 53.29.68N-13.31.62N (23:27 UTC) at the tip of Porcupine Bank. From there we will steam overnight and until 13:41 UTC on Monday, March 27, to the starting point of the next transect at 54.55.46N-10.03.29W and head west. Along the way we see a lot of echoes of blue whiting, but we don't do anything with it, because this is not a transect and because we know that the Norwegian ship, the "Vendla", has already explored this part of the area.

Vast in Cork - Stuck in Cork

Welkom bij de blog van de blauwe wijting survey van 2023. In de week van 13 tot 17 maart is de akoestische apparatuur gecalibreerd. Op woensdag 15 maart werd een mislukte poging gedaan bij Penzance, Cornwell. Hier waren de golven te hoog, waardoor we de calibratie-bol niet konden vinden. Op donderdag 16 maart werd een succesvolle calibratie uitgevoerd in Barnstaple Bay. Tijdens de calibratie waren aan boord: Dirk Burgraaf, Thomas Pasterkamp, Ronan Serre en Felix Mueller.

Welcome to the blog of the blue whiting survey of 2023. In the week of 13 to 17 March, the acoustic equipment was calibrated. On Wednesday 15 March an unsuccessful attempt was made at Penzance, Cornwell. Here the waves were too high, so we couldn't find the calibration sphere. A successful calibration was carried out in Barnstaple Bay on Thursday 16 March. During the calibration were on board: Dirk Burgraaf, Thomas Pasterkamp, Ronan Serre and Felix Mueller.

Maandag 20 maart. Tijdens de calibratieweek is de internetverbinding via VSat erg instabiel. Telkens als het schip een hevige beweging maakt, raakt de schotel-antenne de verbinding met de satelliet kwijt. De verwachting is dat dit alleen maar erger wordt als we transecten gaan varen op de Atlantische oceaan. De oorzaak blijkt een defecte printplaat-module in het kastje van VSat-antenne. Deze module wordt besteld in de VS. De verwachting is dat deze dinsdag 21 maart zal worden afgeleverd in Cork. Dat betekent dat we hierdoor een dag vertraging zullen hebben bij vertrek.

Monday March 20. During the calibration week, the internet connection via VSat is very unstable. Every time the ship makes a violent movement, the dish antenna loses connection with the satellite. The expectation is that this will only get worse when we start sailing transects on the Atlantic Ocean. The cause appears to be a defective circuit board module in the VSat antenna box. This module is ordered in the US. It is expected to be delivered to Cork on Tuesday 21 March. This means that we will have a delay of one day on departure.

Anno 2023 is een goedwerkende internetverbinding heel belangrijk voor een zeegaand schip. Net als aan de wal worden de systemen aan boord steeds meer afhankelijk van internetverbindingen.

In 2023, a well-functioning internet connection is very important for a seagoing ship. Just like on shore, the systems on board are becoming increasingly dependent on internet connections.

Ondertussen beloven de weersvoorspellingen weinig goeds voor de komende dagen.  - Meanwhile, the weather forecasts don't bode well for the next few days.

Op dinsdag 21 maart krijgen we bericht dat de module in Dublin bij de douane ligt en daar blijft hij kennelijk liggen, want op donderdag 23 maart hebben we nog steeds die printplaat niet. Nu hadden we voor donderdag wel aan de onderzoeksreis willen beginnen zonder internet, maar er staat deze week veel te veel wind. Volgens de weersvoorspellingen zal het pas op zaterdag verbeteren.

On Tuesday, March 21, we receive a message that the module is at the customs in Dublin and it apparently remains there, because on Thursday, March 23, we still do not have that circuit board. We bestellen een mobiele Iridium-telefoon voor het geval we met een kapotte VSat-antenne gaan vertrekken. De Rijksrederij stelt voor een zeegaand schip namelijk als voorwaarde dat er op zijn minst een werkende telefoonverbinding is voor noodgevallen. De telefoon arriveert op donderdagochtend 23 maart.

We order an Iridium mobile phone in case we leave with a broken VSat antenna. The Rijksrederij stipulates that a seagoing ship must at least have a working telephone connection for emergencies. The phone arrives on thursday morning 23 March.

Op donderdag besluitend we om de volgende ochtend te vertrekken, zonder werkende VSat. Dit betekent dat we de komende weken geen blog kunnen bijhouden.

On Thursday we decide to leave the next morning, without a working VSat. This means that we will not be able to keep a blog for the next few weeks.
