Gedwongen afkorting - Forced shortcut

On Tuesday, March 22, we carry out a CTD downcast at 6:45 UTC at 55.20.43N-14.11.74W. At this location we decide to break the transect to the west towards Rockall Bank and sail a northeasterly course to 56.34.25N-12.01.40W to the next transect north of us. The reason is that we have been delayed a lot due to the bad weather during the past week. The decision is difficult because we are still seeing blue whiting, although much less than in the east. What also plays a role in our decision is that another storm is coming, this time from the east, while the highest wind speeds are mainly predicted in the west, above Rockall Bank. By moving east as quickly as possible, we hope to avoid the worst wind as much as possible and also be less affected by the ocean swell: because the wind comes from the east, the swell does not rise as high due to Ireland's location. We hope that this decision will prevent us from being stock longer than necessary, so that we can sail more transects later in the north.

- To save time, we have interrupted the transect over the Rockall Bank on 26 March and headed for the transect above it. This means that we do not cover part of the planned area. In any case, the Faroese ship takes over the northern transect over the Bank (that is the transect we cross).

In the evening of Tuesday, 26 March, 17:37 UTC, 56.34.35N-12.01.40E, we turn east on the new transect. The wind has dropped to 5 Beaufort and we decide to go fishing for the still present layer of blue whiting (haul 8, 18:56 UTC). The catch consists of blue whiting.

Trek 8, 26 maart 2024, 56.33.97N-11.43.46W, 560 blauwe wijting. - Haul 8, 26 March 2024, 56.33.97N-11.43.46W, 560kg blue whiting.

- The catch of haul 8 in the hold. This haul contains larger blue whiting than the previous hauls.

After haul 8 we sail further towards the east. When we stop for a CTD-downcast (no.13) at 22:16 UTC, 56.34.57N-11.25.89W, the wind is already increasing considerably. During the night we make very slow progress. On Wednesday, 27 March, we can only heave. "Luckily" the wind is from the east, so at least we are going in the right direction.

Steken - Heaving

Monday 25 March 25 we sail west in the morning. Below the ship you can see a continuous layer of blue whiting. Based on reports from the other research vessels and from our own recordings on the 53.41N transect, we are sailing over an almost continuous school of fish of 40 m height with an area in the order of the size of the Netherlands. At 8:02 we do a short haul, during which we lower the net very briefly into the layer and then quickly retrieve it. The catch consists - of course - of blue whiting.

Trek 7, 25 maart 2024, 55.11.51N-12.24.62W, 360kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 7, 25 March 2024, 55.11.51N-12.24.62W, 360kg blue whiting.

After haul 7 we sail further west at 10:03 UTC. The wind has turned from NE to N and NW and is increasing to a gale. At 16:01 UTC at 55.10.45N-13.42.70W we stop. For safety's sake, we sail very gently against the wind. That's called "heaving". We do this to prevent large waves from hitting the ship from the side and from behind.

Een diepe trek op het intertransect - A deep haul on the intertransect

At night (1:17 UTC) we reach the eastern end of the transect at 53.4088N-13.30.36W and turn NE towards the next transect. On March 24 we sail on this 160 mile long "intertransect": this entire stretch of transect is not used for stock estimation: only the transects that are more or less perpendicular to the depth contours are used. Along the way we stop for a haul at a depth of 1000m (9:43 UTC; 54.32.40N-11.26.58W) . This haul is intended to capture the species diversity in the area. This haul is not used for stock estimation of blue whiting.

- During hauling, crew and researchers collect the fish and squid that have become stuck in the larger mesh.

Pseudoscopelus altipinnis

After sorting out the deep haul (no. 7), we turn west on the new transect at 19:56 UTC. A little later on the edge of the continental shelf (55.12.18N-12.18.10W) we see many echoes of blue whiting on the echogram. During deployment, a winch fails. Although it is repaired after some time, we decide to cancel this haul so as not to lose too much time. At 22:53 UTC we set course again to the west.

Akoestische waarden (cirkels) voor blauwe wijting per dag (kleuren). Rode ruitjes: vistrekken. Blauwe ruitjes: CTD-stations. - Acoustic value's (bubbles) assigned to blue whiting per day (colours). Red diamonds: trawl hauls. Blue diamonds: CTD stations.

Weersverbetering - Weather improvement

During the night of Friday 22 March to Saturday 23 March we get stuck just before the western end of the 53.07N transect due to the wind (WNW 9). During the morning the wind decreases slightly and we slowly sail north, to the starting point of the next transect (53.41.07N-16.00.00). At 13.13 UTC we turn east. With the reduced wind at the back, the ship is a lot calmer.

The aim of this research is to provide a stock estimate of the blue whiting that come to Porcupine Bank, Rockall Bank and the edge of the continental shelf to spawn around this time. The area is large, which is why we are conducting this research with five ships from different countries at the same time. The blue whiting can move quickly. To ensure that we do not miss or double count the fish, we must cover the area with all ships simultaneously in one direction as quickly as possible. On the map you can see what our planning looks like. The Spanish ship, the Vizconde de Eza, had already been in the area before and has now completed the southern part (blue transects). The Tridens (orange transects) has 6 transects almost completed in the south and the Irish ship, the Celtic Explorer (green transects), has also completed 2 transects in the same area. The Celtic Explorer has been sheltering in a bay along the Irish coast for the past two days and will start the green zigzag transect tomorrow morning. The Norwegian ship, the Vendla, has sailed here from Norway during the storm in recent days and will start the red transect early tomorrow morning. The Faroese ship, the Jakup Sverri, will leave Thorshavn tonight towards the area to start the yellow transect. Although all ships have been slightly delayed by the storm, we are still in good sync with each other.

At 20:00 UTC we arrive at the west side of the Porcupine Bank, with blue whiting on the echogram. At 20:50 UTC we stop to fish (haul 5). This is the first haul during this trip that we perform in the dark. Fish have the habit of breaking away from the bottom in the dark and swimming in the water column. That is why we expect more species in the catch this time.

Steken - Stuck in the wind

During the night from Thursday to Friday at 23:54 UTC at 52.50.32N-13.30.71W we turn north heading for the next transect and at 1:51 at 53.07.09N-13.29.64W we move to the west. The weather on the morning of 22 March is still reasonable (WNW 7) and at 7:24 UTC we shoot the net for a thin layer on the ground of the Porcupine Bank which, just before shooting - crumbles into small, red shoals. There is doubt on board whether this is blue whiting. Isn't it horse mackerel or boarfish? The answer lies an hour and a half later in the load: blue whiting.

After this haul we are getting stuck in the wind: we sail very slowly (4 knots) against the wind further to the west. The wind increases to 8 Beaufort. When we see schools of more than 100m high further towards the edge of the Bank, we cannot fish for them because of the high waves. The planned CTD downcast on 53.07.60N-15.26.76W will also not take place.

- The catch of haul 4. The orange fish among the blue whiting are boar fish (Capros aper).
De soorten in de vangst van trek 4: horsmakreel (Trachurus trachurus), grote pijlinktvis (Todarodes sagitattus), blauwe wijting (Micromesistius poutassou), evervis (Capros aper), schelvis (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) en, rechtsboven, lichtende kwallen (Pelagia noctiluca)  - The species in the catch of haul 4: horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), large squid (Todarodes sagitattus), blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou), boarfish (Capros aper), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and, in the upper right corner, mauve stingers (Pelagia noctiluca).

- After haul 4, the wind increases and fishing is no longer possible. Watch a video clip here, made by Arnout Scheepmaker.

"Klaar om op te stijgen?" - "Ready to take off?"

Thursday 21 March 7:05 UTC we turn north on the western end of the third transect at 52.17.05N-15.59.00. Because we expect the weather to deteriorate again, we lower the heavy booms that are normally used for fishing with the 12m beam trawl. This makes the ship more stable in the water. It looks like the ship has been given fighter jet wings: "Ready to take off?"

- Bad weather is expected again. On the way from the third to the fourth transect, the crew lowers the heavy booms that are normally used for fishing with beam trawl.

At 9:10 UTC we start at the western end of the fourth transect, 52.39.58N-15.59.62W, heading east. Now we have the wind from behind (WNW6). Yet we are in no hurry. The reason is that a storm is expected during the night from Thursday to Friday. This means that we will have to wait at the start of the fifth transect, because then we have to sail against the wind again.

- Riekelt Hakvoort is trying to adjust the display of the windmeter in the acoustic room from "knots" to "Beaufort". It's his birthday today!

At 16:18 UTC we return from the deep ocean water to the western edge of Porcupine Bank. On the echogram a layer of blue whiting is visible at approximately 500m. We shoot the net for haul 3. The catch consists of almost three tons of blue whiting.

When we left Cork on Tuesday, 18 March, we were already looking at the weather forecast with some concern. Today, Wednesday 20 March, we will enter a major depression later in the day. At night and in the morning there is no noticeable difference. At 1:11 UTC at 51.43.27N-16.00.27W we set course north. At 1:55 UTC at 51.59.94N-15.59.63W we turn east on the next transect. The sun is shining and there is hardly any wind. At 8:32 UTC on the western edge of Porcupine Bank we shoot the net on a light layer on the bottom at a depth of 430m. The catch is 1750kg blue whiting with approximately 10% greater argentine.

Trek 2, 20 maart 2024, 52.00.19N-14.45.33W, 1750kg blauwe wijting (10% grote zilversmelt). - Haul 2, 20 March 2024, 52.00.19N-14.45.33W, 1750kg blue whiting (10% greater argentine).

- The catch of haul 2. Search picture: among the blue whitings there are also some Kroeyer's lanternfish (Notoscopelus kroeyeri) and greater argentines (Argentina silus). How many lanternfish and how many greater argentines can you spot in this photo?

- A rare fish in the catch of haul 2. It is a species of hatchetfish (Sternoptyx diaphana). This species normally occurs further south, near Spain. Last year we caught this species for the first time in this area.

Na trek 2 varen we verder in oostelijke richting over de bank. Het weer is nog steeds goed. Om 20:15 UTC op 52.00.72N-13.29.74W draaien we naar het noorden en om 16:36 UTC starten we op 52.16.74N-13.29.57W op een nieuw transect in westelijke richting. Na 19:00UTC trekt de wind aan en op het eerstvolgende CTD station (CTD nr 6, 22:31 UTC, 52.17.32N-13.29.57W) is de wind WNW 8.

After haul 2 we sail further east over the bank. The weather is still good. At 20:15 UTC at 52.00.72N-13.29.74W we turn north and at 16:36 UTC we start at 52.16.74N-13.29.57W on a new transect heading west. After 19:00UTC the wind increases and at the next CTD station (CTD nr 6, 22:31 UTC, 52.17.32N-13.29.57W) the wind is WNW 8.
