Clafoutis en meso-pelagische vissen - Clafoutis and mesopelagics

 In de ochtend van woensdag 26 maart komen we om bij het begin van het volgende transect op 55.33.54N-13.18.01W en zetten koers naar het oosten.  Het is hier ongeveer 2.5km diep en er is niets te zien op het echogram. Naarmate we naar het oosten varen, verschijnt er steeds vaker een school op 500m diepte. In de avond, als we bijna bij het einde van het transect zijn, is dit een aaneengesloten laag geworden. Uiteraard wordt hierop gevist (19:12 GMT). De diepte is ongeveer 1000m terwijl we vissen op 500m. Doordat het al donker is komen de meso-pelagische vissen naar boven en bevinden ze zich ook in vangst.

In the morning of Wednesday 26 March we arrive at the start of the next transect at 55.33.54N-13.18.01W and set course to the east. It is about 2.5km deep here and there is nothing to see on the echogram. As we sail east, a school appears more and more often at a depth of 500m. In the evening, when we are almost at the end of the transect, this has become a continuous layer. Of course this is fished (19:12 GMT). The depth is about 1000m while we fish at 500m. Because it is already dark, the meso-pelagic fish come up and are also in catch.

Marjolein maakt de toetjes voor bij de lunch. Het is clafoutis in kleine vormpjes. Na trek 12 varen we naar het einde van het het transect op 55.35.25N-9.2.41W (27 maart, 1:14 GMT). Vandaar varen we naar de Hebriden om beschutting te zoeken voor de storm die er aan komt. Vanaf 10:00 GMT, bevinden we ons in de luwte van Barra, langzaam varen we verder tot west van South Uist. Hier wachten we de storm af.

After haul 12 we sail to the end of the transect at 55.35.25N-9.2.41W (March 27, 1:14 GMT). From there we sail to the Hebrides to seek shelter from the storm that is coming. From 10:00 GMT, we find ourselves in the lee of Barra, slowly we sail on to the west of South Uist. Here we wait out the storm.
