Kaartje met transecten en stations - Map with transects and stations

The weather doesn't really improve. Crew member Youri Bonkestoter has made a little video clip of our bumpy ride, right after haul 10.

- Transects, CTD- and trawl stations and relative distribution of blue whiting in the area covered by Tridens. At this moment our foreign colleagues are still at sea, sailing transects in areas not covered by Tridens.

De ware Alfonsino en een stukje reus - The real Alfonsino and a piece of giant

The deep haul 9 marked the western most position in our survey. Originally we meant to cover two transects over Rockall, but we had to skip that plan due to our material bad luck earlier. Now we sail east to 55.04N-13.59W where we change course at midnight (UTC) and sail 24 nautical miles to the southwest. On 31 March 3:10 UTC we arrive at the next transect (54.46N-14.24W) en set course to the east again. As we arrive at approximately 18:00 (UTC) at the continental slope, a thick layer of blue whiting appears on the echogram. We shoot the net for haul 9.
Trek 9, 31 maart 2019, 54.48N-10.44W, 3000kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 9, 31 March 2019, 54.48N-10.44W, 3000kg blue whiting.
Now it is time for a confession. For years we sometimes catch individuals of Alfonsino (Beryx sp.), a beautiful bright orange coloured fish. There are two species of this genus in the area: Beryx decadactylus and Beryx splendens. In the past we (must have) identified some specimens as B. decadactylus. After that we assumed a bit too easy that all the Beryxes were of that species. In haul 9 we catch another Beryx and look at it more thorough: it turns out to be a specimen of B. splendens. With hindsight we suspect that many of earlier caught specimens were misidentified as B. decadactylus. The English name of B. splendens is Splendid Alfonsino or Beryx.

- In the catch of haul 9: Splendid Alfonsino or Beryx (Beryx splendens).
There is something else in the catch of haul 9 that is cause for some excitement: a piece of cephalopod with gelatinous consistency. This belongs to the giant seven-arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus). This species has eight arms, but one of them is rolled op in a body crevice. This arm is used for mating. The females of this deepsea species can grow as big as three meter. They seem to feed on... jellyfish (see this study). Actually this is not the first time we find this species in the catch. Also on deck of pelagic trawlers pieces of this species can be found on the aft deck: most likely an individual is picked of in the large meshes of the front part of the net and breaks in pieces due to the force caused by towing the gear through the water.

- Piece of a giant: the seven-arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus).
- Mystery: a  frog spawn like substance found on the aft deck during hauling. Most likely colonial Tunicata: Thaliacea (Pyrosoma?). Unlike their bentic relatives, the Ascidians, these animals lives in open water. Found on deck by crew member Ton Meijer.
Vergroot: zich ontwikkelende vislarven? - Close up: developing fish larvae?

Voortgang na trek 9/Progress after haul 9:

On Tuesday 2 April, at 4:05 at the eastern end of the 56.42N transect we arrive again at the slope of the edge of the continental shelf and - it is not a surprise anymore - we see again blue whiting on the echogram. Voor the last time during this survey we shoot the net (haul 10).
Trek 10, 2 april 2019, 56.43N-9.29W, 600kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 10, 2 April 2019, 56.43N-9.29W, 600kg blue whiting.

At 8:10 UTC we arrive at the end of the transect, 56.43N-9.00W, and we start to prepare our trip home via the Irish Sea.

Diepe trek - Deep haul

On 29 March 23:47 UTC we arrive at the next transect at 54.42N-15.39W. This transect is directed to the northwest - this is different from the other transects which are east-west orientated - approximately perpendicular to Rockall Bank. Our transects are almost always east-west orientated, to avoid surveying parallel to depth contours: this would cause undesirable inaccuracies when calculating the abundance of blue whiting. In the morning of 30 March we arrive at the start of the next transect at 55.03N-17.10W where we shoot the net for haul 8. On the echogram there are no recordings of blue whiting.

Trek 8, 30 maart 8:00 UTC, 55.04N-17.05W, 30kg verschillende soorten vis uit de zogenaamde "meso-pelagische zone": 500-1000m diepte. - Haul 8, 30 March 8:00 UTC, 55.04N-17.05W, 30 kg mix of species from the "meso-pelagic zone: 500-1000m depth.
Haul 8 takes place close above the bottom at approximately 1000m. During the haul a diffuse starts to appear at 450m. We think there might be some blue whiting in that layer. Therefore during hauling we stop for ten minutes to tow the net through this layer: it might be good for a blue whiting sample.

The catch exists of a basket of mixed species. The identification is not easy because the are heavily damaged, which is partly due to the big net we use to fish. However we are happy to find two species in the catch that have not been caught before by Tridens during this survey: (Radinesthes decimus and Grammatostomias flagellibarba).

Uiteindelijk, blijkten vier soorten op de meetplank te liggen: - Felix Mueller tries the distinguish the species from the difficult family of Searsidae. In the end it appears that there are four species on the measuring board: Glaskopvis/Multipore searsid (Normichthys operosus); Grootoog glaskopvis/Bigeye searsid (Holtbyrnia macrops); Schnakenbeck glaskopvis/Schnakenbeck’s searsid (Sagamichthys schnakenbecki); (Maulisia microlepis)

Terug op het transect - Back on track

From Tuesday 26 March 2019 8:00 UTC till 28 March 9:00 UTC we stayed in the port of Galway for the repairs of the coolingwater sealing of one ot the two main engines and the and the replacement of the VSat antenne. At first his seemed to be ready on 28 March, but in the end it took longer than we hoped, because the VSat needed to be configurated. This took a large part of the night and we had to wait for high tide after that to be able to leave the harbour.

On our way to Galway, we see dolphins. Crew member Youri Bonkestoter has made a video clip of one of these jumping beauties. The hourglass pattern on its side indicates that the species is a common dolphin (Delphinus delphis).

- In Galway we lay at the quay close to the vessel of our Irish colleagues, the "Celtic Explorer". We left on 26 March 20:00 UTC to take part in the same survey as us.

- Before departure of the "Celtic Explorer" we spend a quick visit on board. Ciaran O'Donnell shows us around. In the background is the Tridens at the quay.

- Arnoud Scheepmaker takes his chance to settle an old bill.

At midnight (0:00 UTC) in the night of 28 to 29 March we arrive at the startingpoint of the transect at 53.43N-13.30W on Porcupine Bank. We carry out a CTD downcast (no 17) and sail in western direction. The waves as a result of strong wind ahead causes white stripes on the echogram and we bring the speed down to 7-8 knots. When we leave Porcupine Bank on the west-side we see strong recordings of blue whiting on the echogram. We shoot the replacement trawl (which is much bigger than the old one: 5600M) for haul 7.

Trek 7, 29 maart 2019, 53.43N-14.01W, 5500kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 7, 29 March 2019,  53.43N-14.01W, 5500kg blue whiting.

- Sorted (by)catch of haul 7:  Atlantic fanfish (Pterycombus brama), Kroyer's lanternfish (Notoscopolus kroyeri), hatchetfish (Argyropelcus olfersi),  a tray with some deepsea shrimp and a black snaggletooth (Astronethes niger) and a few squids (Illex  coindeti, Onychoteuthis banksi, Histioteuthis sp.).

- Felix Mueller and Kyle Sweeney count the deepsea jellyfish (Atolla tenella) in the catch of haul 7.

Drie maal pech - Three times bad luck

Today Wednesday 20 March 20:15 UTC, 51.34N-13.04W we started on our next transect, heading west up the slope of Porcupine Bank. To our surprise we did not see any blue whiting. On Thursday 21 March, at 3:50 UTC, 51.35N-15.12W we turned north and at 6:21 UTC, 51.51N-15.12W we turned east on the next transect. At 51.51N-14.44W we saw blue whiting marks and shot the net for Haul 3 (6515kg blue whiting).

Trek 3, 21 maart 2019, 51.51.07N-14.44.17W, 6515kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 3, 21 March 2019, 51.51.07N-14.44.17W, 6515kg blue whiting.

- Mate Tiemen Kramer handling the winches during shooting of the net in haul 3.

On the bank itself there was no blue whiting. Off the slope on the eastside at approximately 500m the marks appeared again. We fished on these marks at 16:00 UTC, 51.51N-13.29W (Haul 4, 1850kg).

- The catch of haul 3 en 4 contains a few specimens of hake (Merluccius merluccius).

Thomas Pasterkamp inspecteert de vangst in the last. - Thomas Pasterkamp inspects the catch in the hold.

Boven: blauwe wijting (Micromesistius poutassou), onder: heek (Merluccius merluccius). - Upper: blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou), lower: hake (Merluccius merluccius).

- From the catch of haul 4: a velvet belly lantern shark (Etmopterus spinax).

We keep spotting blue whiting and extend the planned transect again towards the east. As the blue whiting recordings become less, we turn north at 21:41 UTC, 51.51N-12.41W. At exactly 0:00 we reached the new transect (52.07N-12.41W). In the early morning of 22nd March we sail towards the west again. The wind has increased and is right ahead which creates a layer of air bubble under the transducers and causes the appearance of spikes and white stripes on the echogram. This unfortunately impacts on the quality of the results. To reduce the appearance of stripes we lower the speed from 10 to 5 knots.

- Echogram at 52.07N-13.54W, heading west. Due to fibrations in the ship's hull and air bubbles under the transducer caused by the strong wind right ahead, spikes and white stripes appear on the echogram. As this affects the quality of the collected data. To reduce this effect as much as possible, we lower the speed from 10 to 5 knots.

As well as the wind causing stripes on the echogram, we suffered another setback. Since Thursday afternoon 21 March one of the two main engines is out of order due to cooling water leakage (for the experts: cooling water sealing between the crankcase and the liner). This means that into the wind our speed is limited to just 5 to 6 knots. Fishing is difficult (we can just about tow the trawl). Only with the wind at our backs and under good sea conditions do we just about succeed. This was the case for Haul 4.

– The clip shows water leaking alongside the line rand the crankcase.

We have had more bad luck. It has been a while since our last blog post and there is a reason for that; The motion compensation mount of the VSat antenna is damaged. The VSat antenna is in the conspicuous white dome in the mast of almost all modern vessels. As a result of this damage the mechanism that keeps the antenna pointed in the direction of the satellite does not function anymore. Therefore we have not had any internet since 22 March.

On 24 March, 13:56 UTC 53.11N-14.45W we shoot the net for a layer of blue whiting. As we are towing the net, one of the trawl doors touches the bottom causing the net to come in contact with the seabed. Upon hauling it appears that the whole lower part of the trawl net has torn off. Even the codend is gone. Hence there is no catch. Luckily the trawl sonar and the doors have not been lost. Readying the spare trawl for fishing will take some time. Therefore we will not be able to fish for the remainder of the day and tomorrow morning.

Voortgang na trek 5/Progress after haul 5:

On Monday 25 March at 9:00 UTC at 53.27N-13.30W we interrupt the survey and head for Galway. There a specialist engineer will come on board with the necessary parts to repair the main engine. Hopefully we will also be able repair the damage to the mounting of the SVat antenna, so we can access the internet again.
