Terug op het transect - Back on track

Van dinsdag 26 maart 2019 8:00 UTC tot en met 28 maart 9:00 UTC hebben we in de haven van Galway gelegen voor het herstellen van de koelwaterlekkage van een van de twee hoofdmotoren en de vervanging van de VSat antenne. Dit leek klaar te zijn op de avond van 28 maart, maar het duurde uiteindelijk toch nog langer dan gehoopt, omdat de VSat antenne nog geconfirgureerd moest worden. Dit duurde een groot deel van de nacht en daarna moesten we nog op hoogwater wachten om de haven te kunnen verlaten.

From Tuesday 26 March 2019 8:00 UTC till 28 March 9:00 UTC we stayed in the port of Galway for the repairs of the coolingwater sealing of one ot the two main engines and the and the replacement of the VSat antenne. At first his seemed to be ready on 28 March, but in the end it took longer than we hoped, because the VSat needed to be configurated. This took a large part of the night and we had to wait for high tide after that to be able to leave the harbour.

Onderweg naar Galway, zien we dolfijnen. Bemanningslid Youri Bonkestoter heeft een clipje gemaakt van een van deze schoospringers. Aan het "zandloper" patroon op de flank van het dier is goed te zien dat het een gewone dolfijn (Delphinus delphis) is.
On our way to Galway, we see dolphins. Crew member Youri Bonkestoter has made a video clip of one of these jumping beauties. The hourglass pattern on its side indicates that the species is a common dolphin (Delphinus delphis).

In Galway liggen we vlakbij het schip van onze Ierse collega's, de "Celtic Explorer". Zij zouden vertrekken op 26 maart om 20:00 UTC  om deel te nemen aan hetzelfde onderzoek als de wij. - In Galway we lay at the quay close to the vessel of our Irish colleagues, the "Celtic Explorer". We left on 26 March 20:00 UTC to take part in the same survey as us.

Voor het vertrek van de "Celtic Explorer" nemen we nog even een kijkje aan boord. We worden rond geleid door Ciaran O'Donnell. Op de achtergrond ligt de Tridens. - Before departure of the "Celtic Explorer" we spend a quick visit on board. Ciaran O'Donnell shows us around. In the background is the Tridens at the quay. 

De nieuwe VSat bol - met daarin de antenne - wordt in de mast geplaatst. - The new VSat dome - with the antenna inside - is placed in the mast.

Machinisten Cock Zuijderduijn en Gerko Kuijt checken aan de onderkant van de bol de afstand tussen de gaten voor de bouten waarmee de bol moet worden bevestigd. - Engineers Cock Zuijderduijn en Gerko Kuijt are checking the distance between bolt-holes at the underside of the new VSat dome.

Om middernacht (0:00 UTC) in de nacht van 28 op 29 maart arriveren we op het beginpunt van het transect op 53.43N-13.30W op de Porcupine Bank. We doen een CTD opname (nr 17) en varen in westelijke richting. De golven als gevolg van harde tegenwind veroorzaken weer witte strepen op het echgram. We matigen de snelheid naar 7-8 knopen. Bij het verlaten van Porcupine Bank op de westelijke kant, zien we sterke aantekeningen van blauwe wijting. We zetten uit met het reserve net (dat veel groter is dan het oude: 5600M) voor trek 7.

At midnight (0:00 UTC) in the night of 28 to 29 March we arrive at the startingpoint of the transect at 53.43N-13.30W on Porcupine Bank. We carry out a CTD downcast (no 17) and sail in western direction. The waves as a result of strong wind ahead causes white stripes on the echogram and we bring the speed down to 7-8 knots. When we leave Porcupine Bank on the west-side we see strong recordings of blue whiting on the echogram. We shoot the replacement trawl (which is much bigger than the old one: 5600M) for haul 7.

Gesorteerde (bij)vangst van trek 7: Waaierbraam/Zilverbraam (Pterycombus brama), Kroeyers lantaarnvis (Notoscopolus kroyeri), bijlvis (Argyropelcus olfersi),  een bakje met enkele diepzeegarnalen en een zwarte snaveltand (Astronethes niger) en enkele inktvissen (Illex  coindeti, Onychoteuthis banksi, Histioteuthis sp.). - Sorted (by)catch of haul 7:  Atlantic fanfish (Pterycombus brama), Kroyer's lanternfish (Notoscopolus kroyeri), hatchetfish (Argyropelcus olfersi),  a tray with some deepsea shrimp and a black snaggletooth (Astronethes niger) and a few squids (Illex  coindeti, Onychoteuthis banksi, Histioteuthis sp.).

Zes exemplaren van haak-tentakel pijlinktvis (Onychoteuthis banksi), rechtsboven enkele kapotte exemplaren van paraplu pijlinktvis (Histioteuthis sp.). - Six individuals of hooked squid (Onychoteuthis banksi), upper right a few damaged umbrella squid (Histioteuthis sp.).

Voor de mensen die inktvissoorten willen herkennen: het kraakbeen "slot" dat de kop met straalpijp aan de mantel bevestigd. Deze is streep-vormig in de familie van de Onychoteuthidae. - For people who want to learn to identify squid: funnel lock cartilage which connects the head with funnel to the mantle. It has the form of a stripe in the family of Onychoteuthidae.

Het kraakbeen "slot" dat de kop met straalpijp aan de mantel bevestigd. Deze is T-vormig in de familie van de Ommastrephidae, waartoe slanke pijl inktvis (Illex coindeti) behoort. - Funnel lock cartilage which connects the head with funnel to the mantle. It is T-shaped in the family of Ommastrephidae to which broadtail shortfin squid (Illex coindeti) belongs.
