Diepe trek - Deep haul

Op 29 maart 23:47 UTC arriveren we bij het volgende transect op 54.42N-15.39W. Dit transect ligt naar het noordwesten - anders dan de overige transecten, die oost-west zijn georienteerd - ongeveer haaks op Rockall Bank. Onze transecten zijn vrijwel altijd oost-west georienteerd, om zoveel mogelijk te voorkomen dat ze evenwijdig langs de dieptelijnen lopen: dit zou tot ongewenste onnauwkeurigheden leiden bij de berekening van de grootte van het bestand van blauwe wijting.

In de ochtend van 30 maart komen we bij het begin van het volgende transect op 55.03N-17.10W waar we uitzetten voor trek 8. Op het echogram zijn geen aantekeningen te zien van blauwe wijting.

On 29 March 23:47 UTC we arrive at the next transect at 54.42N-15.39W. This transect is directed to the northwest - this is different from the other transects which are east-west orientated - approximately perpendicular to Rockall Bank. Our transects are almost always east-west orientated, to avoid surveying parallel to depth contours: this would cause undesirable inaccuracies when calculating the abundance of blue whiting. In the morning of 30 March we arrive at the start of the next transect at 55.03N-17.10W where we shoot the net for haul 8. On the echogram there are no recordings of blue whiting.

Trek 8 vindt plaats vlak boven de bodem op ongeveer 1000m. Tijdens de trek ontstaat op 450m een zwakke laag, waar blauwe wijting in zou kunnen zitten. Tijdens het halen vissen we ook nog 10 minuten door deze laag: misschien levert het een monster blauwe wijting op.
Haul 8 takes place close above the bottom at approximately 1000m. During the haul a diffuse starts to appear at 450m. We think there might be some blue whiting in that layer. Therefore during hauling we stop for ten minutes to tow the net through this layer: it might be good for a blue whiting sample.

De vangst bestaat uit een mand visjes van verschillende soorten. De determinatie valt niet mee, doordat ze beschadigd zijn door het grote net waarmee we vissen. Maar zitten wel een paar soorten bij die we hier aan boord nog niet eerder gezien hebben (Radinesthes decimus en Grammatostomias flagellibarba)
The catch exists of a basket of mixed species. The identification is not easy because the are heavily damaged, which is partly due to the big net we use to fish. However we are happy to find two species in the catch that have not been caught before by Tridens during this survey: (Radinesthes decimus and Grammatostomias flagellibarba).

Felix Mueller probeert soorten uit elkaar te houden van de lastige familie Searsidae. Uiteindelijk, blijkten vier soorten op de meetplank te liggen: - Felix Mueller tries the distinguish the species from the difficult family of Searsidae. In the end it appears that there are four species on the measuring board: Glaskopvis/Multipore searsid (Normichthys operosus); Grootoog glaskopvis/Bigeye searsid (Holtbyrnia macrops); Schnakenbeck glaskopvis/Schnakenbeck’s searsid (Sagamichthys schnakenbecki); (Maulisia microlepis)
