Verandering van plannen - Change of plans

We bereiken het startpunt van het eerste geplande transect op 51.2.70N-13.59.65W op 19 maart 2019 om 10:00 UTC en doen de eerste CTD opname van de reis. Het valt op dat er veel blauwe wijting is op het echogram. Dat is aan de ene kant leuk, want in dit onderzoek gaat het erom om een schatting te maken van de hoeveelheid blauwe wijting in het gebied. Aan de andere kant is enigszins verontrustend, omdat deze hoge concentraties zich aan de uiteinden van het transect bevinden. Dat betekent dat er waarschijnlijk nog een hoop blauwe wijting zich buiten het geplande gebied bevindt. En dat is niet de bedoeling! We bestrijken het gebied we blauwe wijting verwachten zo goed mogelijk en baseren on hierbij op historische gegevens.
Eerst doen we een trek om 12:00 UTC met de pelagische trawl om een monster te verzamelen voor de leeftijd, gewicht en lengte van de blauwe wijting. Daarna varen we op het geplande transect naar het westen.

We reach the starting point of the first planned transect at 51.2.70N-13.59.65W on 19 March at 10:00 UTC and carry out the first CTD downcast of this trip. It is apparent that there is a lot of blue whiting on the echogram. On the one hand that is nice, because this research is about making an estimation of the amount of blue whiting in the area. On the other hand this is slightly alarming, because high concentrations at the outer end of the transects means that there probably much more blue whiting outside the area that we have planned to cover. And that is not how it should be! We cover the area where we expect blue whiting as good as possible based on historic information.
First we carry out a haul with the pelagic trawl at 12:00 UTC to collect a sample for age, weight and length determination. Afterwards we sail on the planned transect in western direction.

Trek 1, 19 maart 2019, 51.2.70N-13.59.65W12:00, 1385kg blauwe wijting - Haul 1, 19 March 2019, 51.2.70N-13.59.65W, 1385kg blue whiting.

De vangst van trek 1 bestaat uit 1385kg blauwe wijting - The catch of haul 1 consists of 1385kg of blue whiting.

Na ongeveer 20 mijl worden de aantekeningen van blauwe wijting op het echogram minder en verdwijnen helemaal. Na CTD 2 (20:30 UTC; 51.03N-15.35W) bereiken we om 22:54 UTC het westelijke uiteinde van het transect (51.03N-16.00W) en draaien naar noord in de richting van het volgende transect. Op 20 Maart (00:22 UTC) varen we weer oostwaards op het 51.19N transect. In de ochtend varen we weer Porcupine Bank op. Om 7:00 UTC bevinden we ons weer ter hoogte van het startpunt en weer is er veel blauwe wijting te zien en zetten uit voor trek 2 voor 5 ton blauwe wijting. We besluiten om van het geplande transect af te wijken, niet naar het noorden te draaien, maar door te varen naar het oosten. Uiteraard stellen we onze buitenlandse collega's op de hoogte van de afwijking van het afgesproken schema en van de onverwachte dichtheden blauwe wijting in dit gebied. Na ongeveer dertig mijl nemen de hoeveelheden blauwe wijting op het echogram zoveel af dat we het aan durven om in noordelijke richting naar het volgende transect te varen op 51.19N-13.03W.

After approximately 20 miles the recordings fade out. CTD station number 2 is at 20:30 UTC at 51.03N-15.35W. At 22:54 we reach the western end of  the transect (51.03N-16.00W) and turn north to the next transect. On 20 March (00:22) we sail east on the 51.19N transect. In the morning we sail again on the slope of Porcupine Bank and at 7:00 UTC we are at the same level of the starting point with again a lot of blue  whiting on the echogram. We shoot the net for haul 2 and catch 5 tons of blue whiting.
We decide for a change of plans and sail on in eastern direction instead of turning northwards to the next transect. Of course we notify our foreign colleague about this and the unexpected high concentrations of blue whiting in this area. After approximately 25 miles the blue whiting layer start to fade out and after 30 nmi's we turn north to the next transect at 51.19N-13.03W.

In de vangst worden deze stekelige "stengels" gevonden. Na enig onderzoek, blijkt het te gaan om de armen van een zeester van de orde van Brisingida die vooral in de diepzee voorkomen. - In the catch we find these spiny "stems". After some research it appears to be the arms a brisingid seastar. In the words of a Scottish colleague: "lovers of the abyss".
