Tridens onderweg naar de calibratie-locatie - Tridens on its way to the calibration site

Op 10 maart 2025 om 14:00 UTC verlaat de Tridens de haven van Scheveningen voor het maken van de jaarlijkse bestandsschatting van blauwe wijting. Het wetenschappelijke team bestaat uit Dirk Burggraaf, Thomas Pasterkamp, Serdar Sakinan, Theresa Peters (DE), Sebastian (DK) en Bram Couperus. Op het moment van uitvaren is het rustig zonnig weer en de voorspellingen zijn zeer gunstig voor de komende week. Voorafgaand aan de eigenlijke survey gaan we het echolood calibreren. Anders dan in voorgaande jaren zullen we na een week in het weekend niet naar Cork gaan. In plaats daarvan, zal een deel van de bemanning halverwege de reis worden afgelost. De locatie en de dag zijn afhankelijk van de vorderingen tijdens de eerste helft van de reis.

On March 10, 2025 at 14:00 UTC, the Tridens leaves the port of Scheveningen to make the annual stock estimate of blue whiting. The scientific team consists of Dirk Burggraaf, Thomas Pasterkamp, Serdar Sakinan, Theresa Peters (DE), Sebastian (DK) and Bram Couperus. At the time of sailing out, the weather is calm and sunny and the forecasts are very favourable for the coming week. Prior to the actual survey, we will calibrate the echo sounder. Unlike in previous years, we will not go to Cork after a week at the weekend. Instead, there will be a crew exchange halfway through the voyage. The location and day depend on the progress made during the first half of the trip.

Het onderzoek voor het maken van een bestandsschatting van blauwe wijting (Micromesistius poutassou), de zogenaamde "blauwe wijting survey" wordt tegelijk uitgevoerd door vier schepen, de Jakup Sverri (Faroer), de Celtic Explorer (Ierland), de Vendla (Noorwegen) en de Tridens (Nederland/EU). - The research for creating a stock assessment of blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou), the so-called "blue whiting survey," is being carried out simultaneously by four vessels: the Jakup Sverri (Faroe Islands), the Celtic Explorer (Ireland), the Vendla (Norway), and the Tridens (Netherlands/EU).

Op 11 maart, - 'smiddags, ter hoogte van Lands End (Cornwall) doen we een test-trek met het pelagische net, om te kijken of alles goed werkt en om de vele nieuwe bemanningsleden aan boord in te werken. Deze trek is bedoeld om te kijken of het net en de apparatuur naar behoren werkt. Er zitten een paar manden vis in de kuil: evervis, wat horsmakreel en sprot en drie flinke heken.

On 11 March, - in the afternoon, near Lands End (Cornwall) we do a test haul with the pelagic net, to see if everything works properly and to train the many new crew members on board. This haul is intended to see if the net and the equipment are working properly. There are a few baskets of fish in the codend: boar fish, some horse mackerel and sprat and three large hakes.

De vangst van de test-trek bestaat voornamelijk uit evervis. Er zit ook wat sprot en horsmakreel in. - The catch of the test haul consists mainly of boarfish. There is also some sprat and horsemackerel in it.

Op woensdag 12 maart 10:45 UTC gaat de Tridens voor anker in Bantry Bay. Voor de lunch zijn de calibratie-hengels met de elekrische spoelen en de camera's geinstalleerd door de bemanning. Direct na de lunch beginnen we met de calibratie. Op deze dag calibreren we de 38 kHz transducer.

On Wednesday, 12 March 12, 10:45 UTC, the Tridens anchors in Bantry Bay. Before lunch, the calibration rods with the electric reels and the cameras were installed by the crew. Immediately after lunch we start with the calibration. On this day we calibrate the 38 kHz transducer.

Nadat de hengels zijn gemonteerd, wordt een metalen bol met visdraad aan de draad bevestigd. - After the rods are assembled, a metal ball is attached to the wire with fishing thread. 

Het is nog best gepiel met dat dunne draad! - It's quite fiddly with that thin wire!

Eindelijk is zijn de calibratie-bollen bevestigd en worden ze te water gelaten. - Finally the calibration spheres are attached and they are lowered in the water.

Met de electrische spoelen wordt de koperen bol door de geluidsbundel van het echolood geleid. Op het scherm kunnen we zien waar de bol zich bevindt en waar in de bundel we metingen hebben verricht. -  With the electric reels, the copper sphere is guided through the sound beam of the echosounder. On the screen we can see where the sphere is located and where in the beam we have taken measurements.
