Steken - Stuck in the wind

In de nacht van donderdag op vrijdag in de nacht draaien we om 23:54 UTC op 52.50.32N-13.30.71W draaien we naar het noorden om vervolgens om 1:51 op 53.07.09N-13.29.64W op het volgende transect koers te zetten naar het westen. Het weer in de ochtend van 22 maart is nog redelijk (WNW 7) en om 7:24 UTC zetten we het net uit voor een dunne laag op de grond van de Porcupine Bank die, vlak voor het uitzetten - uiteenbrokkelt in kleine, rode schooltjes. Er heerst twijfel aan boord of dit wel blauwe wijting is. Is het geen horsmakreel of evervis? Het antwoord ligt anderhalf uur later in de last: blauwe wijting.

During the night from Thursday to Friday at 23:54 UTC at 52.50.32N-13.30.71W we turn north heading for the next transect and at 1:51 at 53.07.09N-13.29.64W we move to the west. The weather on the morning of 22 March is still reasonable (WNW 7) and at 7:24 UTC we shoot the net for a thin layer on the ground of the Porcupine Bank which, just before shooting - crumbles into small, red shoals. There is doubt on board whether this is blue whiting. Isn't it horse mackerel or boarfish? The answer lies an hour and a half later in the load: blue whiting.

Na deze trek kunnen we alleen nog steken : we varen heel langzaam (4 knopen) tegen de wind verder naar het westen. De wind neemt toe naar 8 Beaufort. Als we verderop in de richting van de rand van de Bank scholen zien van meer dan 100m hoog, kunnen we er niet op vissen vanwege de hoge golven. De geplande CTD-opname op 53.07.60N-15.26.76W gaat ook niet door.

After this haul we are getting stuck in the wind: we sail very slowly (4 knots) against the wind further to the west. The wind increases to 8 Beaufort. When we see schools of more than 100m high further towards the edge of the Bank, we cannot fish for them because of the high waves. The planned CTD downcast on 53.07.60N-15.26.76W will also not take place.

De soorten in de vangst van trek 4: horsmakreel (Trachurus trachurus), grote pijlinktvis (Todarodes sagitattus), blauwe wijting (Micromesistius poutassou), evervis (Capros aper), schelvis (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) en, rechtsboven, lichtende kwallen (Pelagia noctiluca)  - The species in the catch of haul 4: horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), large squid (Todarodes sagitattus), blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou), boarfish (Capros aper), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and, in the upper right corner, mauve stingers (Pelagia noctiluca).
