Inktvissen ontleden - Dissecting squid

In de nacht van woensdag 27 - op donderdag 28 maart, draaien we om 0:41 UTC op 56.34.91N-9.00.23W naar het noorden. De wind is dan afgenomen to 6 E. In de ochtend zien we aan stuurboord een eiland. Dat is St. Kilda. Om 7:58 UTC op 57.56.32N-9.00.06W draaien we naar het westen op het volgende transect. In het begin zijn we nog op het continentale plat. Gewoonlijk beginnen we blauwe wijting te zien als de diepte 400m wordt. Deze echo's vormen naar westen toe de welbekende laag blauwe wijting op ongeveer 450m diepte. Nu zien we scholen op 240m diepte die steeds talrijker worden en een laag op de bodem beginnen te vormen. We zijn er niet zeker van of dit blauwe wijting is en zetten om 9:16 UTC het net uit voor trek 9. De vangst bestaat uit vrij kleine blauwe wijting.

On the night of Wednesday 27 - Thursday 28 March, we turn north at 0:41 UTC at 56.34.91N-9.00.23W. The wind has then decreased to 6 E. In the morning we see an island at starboard. That is the isle of St. Kilda. At 7:58 UTC at 57.56.32N-9.00.06W we turn west on the next transect. In the beginning we are still on the continental shelf. Usually we start seeing blue whiting when the depth reaches 400m. To the west, these echoes form the well-known layer of blue whiting at approximately 450m depth. Now we see schools at 240m depth that are becoming more numerous and starting to form a layer on the bottom. We are not sure if this is blue whiting and shoot the net at 9:16 UTC for haul 9. The catch consists of quite small blue whiting.

Enkele soorten in trek 9: Ierse pijlinktvis (Todaropsis eblanae), blauwkeeltje (Helicolenus dactylopterus), schelvis (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), kortvinpijlinktvis (Illex conideti), grote zilversmelt (Argentina silus). -  Some species from haul 9: lesser flying squid (Todaropsis eblanae), bluemouth (Helicolenus dactylopterus), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), shortfin squid (Illex conideti), greater argentine (Argentina silus).

Ierse pijlinktvis (Todaropsis eblanae), volwassen mannetje. Dat kun je zien aan de speciaal aangepaste onderste armen. Deze worden gebruikt om spermapakketjes in te brengen in de mantelholte van het vrouwtje. - Lesser shortfin squid (Todaropsis eblanae), adult male. You can see this in the specially adapted lower arms. These are used to insert sperm packets into the mantle cavity of the female.

We hebben een pijlinktvis open gesneden en zo goed als mogelijk namen gegeven aan de verschillende organen. Dit is een mannetje. Let vooral op de spermapakketjes in de testis. Boven het kieuwhart en op de verteringsklier liggen spermapakketjes die de testis al verlaten hebben. Dit mannetjes was er helemaal klaar voor! - We cut open a squid and gave names to the different organs as best we could. This is a male. Pay particular attention to the sperm packets (spermatophores) in the testis. Above the gill heart and on the digestive gland are sperm packets that have already left the testis. This guy was ready for it!

Het vrouwtje van een volwassen pijlinktvis heeft uiteraard andere geslachtsorganen. De nidumentale klier maakt de eitjes. Dit vrouwtjes zit er vol mee! - The female of an adult squid obviously has different sexual organs. The nidumental gland produces the eggs. This lady is full of it!

Na trek 9 varen we verder naar het westen. We blijven veel blauwe wijting zien op het echogram, maar vissen er vandaag nier meer op. Door het slecht weer van de afgelopen anderhalve week, zijn we fors achterop het schema geraakt. Helaas komt er nog meer slecht weer aan. Om18:24 UTC als we stoppen voor een CTD-opname, is de wind alweer aangewakkerd tot ONO 8. Na het CTD-station hebben we nog 10 mijl de wind van achteren. Als we om 20:03 UTC, 57.56.08N-11.59.85, naar het noorden draaien, loopt onze snelheid terug naar 4-5 knopen.

After trek 9 we sail further west. We continue to see a lot of blue whiting on the echosounder, but we are no longer fishing for them today. Due to the bad weather of the past week and a half, we have fallen well behind schedule. Unfortunately, more bad weather is coming. At 18:24 UTC when we stop for a CTD recording, the wind has already increased to ENE 8. After the CTD station we still have the wind behind us for ten more miles. As we turn north at 57.56.08N-11.59.85, 20:03 UTC, our speed drops to 4-5 knots.
