Gedwongen afkorting - Forced shortcut

Op dinsdag 22 maart voeren we een CTD-opname uit om 6:45 UTC op 55.20.43N-14.11.74W. Op deze locatie besluiten we om het transect naar het westen in de richting van Rockall Bank af te breken en een noordoostelijke koers te varen naar 56.34.25N-12.01.40W naar het volgende transect ten noorden van ons. De reden is dat we als gevolg van het slechte weer tijdens de afgelopen week, veel vertraging hebben opgelopen. De beslissing is moeilijk, want we zien nog steeds blauwe wijting, hoewel het wel veel minder is dan in het oosten. Wat ook meespeelt bij onze beslissing is dat er weer storm aan komt, dit keer uit het oosten, terwijl de hoogste windsnelheden vooral in het westen, boven Rockall Bank worden voorspeld. Door zo snel als mogelijk naar het oosten te gaan, hopen we de ergste wind zoveel mogelijk te ontlopen en ook minder last te krijgen van de oceaandeining: omdat de wind uit het oosten komt, stuwt de deining minder hoog op door de ligging van Ierland. We hopen door deze beslissing te voorkomen dat we langer dan nodig vast komen te liggen, zodat we later in het noorden meer transect kunnen varen.

On Tuesday, March 22, we carry out a CTD downcast at 6:45 UTC at 55.20.43N-14.11.74W. At this location we decide to break the transect to the west towards Rockall Bank and sail a northeasterly course to 56.34.25N-12.01.40W to the next transect north of us. The reason is that we have been delayed a lot due to the bad weather during the past week. The decision is difficult because we are still seeing blue whiting, although much less than in the east. What also plays a role in our decision is that another storm is coming, this time from the east, while the highest wind speeds are mainly predicted in the west, above Rockall Bank. By moving east as quickly as possible, we hope to avoid the worst wind as much as possible and also be less affected by the ocean swell: because the wind comes from the east, the swell does not rise as high due to Ireland's location. We hope that this decision will prevent us from being stock longer than necessary, so that we can sail more transects later in the north.

Om tijd te winnen onderbreken we op 26 maart het transect over de Rockall Bank en zetten koers naar het erboven gelegen transect. Dit betekent dat we een deel van het geplande gebied niet dekken. Het Faroese schip  neemt in elk geval het noordelijke transect over de Bank over (dat is het transect dat we kruisen). - To save time, we have interrupted the transect over the Rockall Bank on 26 March and headed for the transect above it. This means that we do not cover part of the planned area. In any case, the Faroese ship takes over the northern transect over the Bank (that is the transect we cross).

In de avond van dinsdag 26 maart, 17:37 UTC, 56.34.35N-12.01.40E, draaien we naar het oosten op het nieuwe transect. De wind is afgenomen naar 5 beaufort en we besluiten om te gaan vissen op de nog steeds aanwezige laag blauwe wijting (trek 8, 18:56 UTC). De vangst bestaat uit blauwe wijting.

In the evening of Tuesday, 26 March, 17:37 UTC, 56.34.35N-12.01.40E, we turn east on the new transect. The wind has dropped to 5 Beaufort and we decide to go fishing for the still present layer of blue whiting (haul 8, 18:56 UTC). The catch consists of blue whiting.

Na trek 8 varen we verder richting het oosten. Als we om 22:16 UTC, 56.34.57N-11.25.89W, stoppen voor een CTD-opname (nr.13), is de wind al flink aan het toenemen. In de nacht vorderen we heel langzaam. Op woensdag 27 maart kunnen we alleen nog steken. "Gelukkig" komt de wind uit het oosten, zodat we in elk geval in de goede richting gaan.

During the night we make very slow progress. On Wednesday, 27 March, we can only heave. "Luckily" the wind is from the east, so at least we are going in the right direction.
