Steken - Heaving

Maandag 25 maart, varen we in de ochtend naar het westen. Onder het schip zien een onafgebroken laag blauwe wijting. Afgaande op berichten van de andere onderzoeksschepen en van onze eigen opnamen op het 53.41N transect, varen we over een vrijwel aaneengesloten school vis van 40 m hoogte met een oppervlak in de orde van grootte van Nederland. Om 8:02 doen we een korte vistrek, waarbij we het net heel kort in de laag laten zakken om vervolgens snel te halen. De vangst bestaat - uiteraard - uit blauwe wijting.

Monday 25 March 25 we sail west in the morning. Below the ship you can see a continuous layer of blue whiting. Based on reports from the other research vessels and from our own recordings on the 53.41N transect, we are sailing over an almost continuous school of fish of 40 m height with an area in the order of the size of the Netherlands. At 8:02 we do a short haul, during which we lower the net very briefly into the layer and then quickly retrieve it. The catch consists - of course - of blue whiting.

Na trek 7 varen we om10:03 UTC weer verder naar het westen. De wind is van NO naar N en NW gedraaid en neemt toe naar storm. Om 16:01 UTC op 55.10.45N-13.42.70W stoppen we. Voor de veiligheid varen we heel zachtjes tegen de wind. Dat heet "steken".  Dat doen we om te voorkomen dat grote golven het schip van de zijkant en van achteren raken.

After haul 7 we sail further west at 10:03 UTC. The wind has turned from NE to N and NW and is increasing to a gale. At 16:01 UTC at 55.10.45N-13.42.70W we stop. For safety's sake, we sail very gently against the wind. That's called "heaving". We do this to prevent large waves from hitting the ship from the side and from behind.
