Start van de blauwe wijting survey - editie 2018! / Start of the blue whiting survey - edition 2018!

Sinds gisterochtend (dinsdag 20 maart) is de blauwe wijting survey begonnen. Tijdens de voorgaande week hebben we de apparatuur gecalibreerd in Bantry Bay, Ierland. In eerste instantie hadden we gehoopt om de calibratie uit te voeren bij St. Michaels Mount bij Land's End net als vorig jaar, maar de weersomstandigheden lieten dit niet toe. Ook in de beschutting van Bear Island in Bantry Bay lukte dit niet, omdat het anker niet hield vanwege de wind. Uiteindelijk waren we gedwongen om diep de baai in te varen. De calibratie zelf verliep daarna zonder grote problemen.
Since yesterday morning (Tuesday 20 March) the blue whiting survey started. Last week we calibrated the acoustic equipment in Bantry Bay, Ireland. Initially we had hoped to calibrate at St. Michaels Mount near Land's End like we did last year, but the weather conditions did not allow this. Even in the shelter of Bear Island the anchor did not hold because of the hard wind. In the end we were forced to sail deep into the bay. The calibration itself was carried out without major problems.

Na een verblijf van een lang weekend in Cork van 16 tot 19 maart, vertrok de Tridens om 15:00 UTC uit Cork. Onderweg naar het startpunt van de survey (51.14N – 13.00W) hebben we een test trek gedaan vlak voor de Ierse kust: geen vangst, afgezien van wat sprotjes die in de mazen waren gestoken. De survey is van start gegaan op dinsdag 20 maart om 7:00 UTC. Op het eerste transect zagen we geen blauwe wijting op het echogram. Op het 52.06N transect zagen we wel blauwe wijting. We hebben inmiddels twee trekken gedaan van elk ruim 3 ton blauwe wijting.

After a long weekend in Cork from 16 to 19 March, Tridens left at 15:00 UTC from the port of Cork. On the way to the starting point of the survey (51.14N – 13.00W) we carried out a test haul close to the coast: there was no catch except for some sprat sticking in the meshes. The actual survey started on Tuesday 20 March at 7:00 UTC. On the first transect we did not see any recordings of blue whiting on the echogram. On the 52.06N transect we did encounter blue whiting. By now we have conducted two hauls of more than 3 tons of blue whiting each.
