On thursday 29 March we see only scattered schools of blue whiting. Shooting the net for this would take too much time. In the morning we finish the 56.04N-transect in eastern direction. At 13:00 UTC we turn north towards the next transect (start 56.44N-9.00W). We arrive there at 16:30 UTC and turn west.

During periods without fishing, work goes on. Thomas reads the otoliths of the blue whiting for the age determination. Otoliths have growth rings, comparable to the growth rings of trees. Each year a new ring is added: by counting the rings one can read the age of the fish. One would expect that bigger fish is always older than smaller fish, but this is certainly not always true.
