Langzame raai - Slow transect

Dinsdag 27 maart is een moeizame dag met windkracht 8 pal tegen op de 55.24N-raai richting het westen. Onze snelheid is de hele dag ongeveer 1-2 knopen: als we sneller varen, veroorzaakt dit te veel storing op het echogram. In de vroege ochtend van 28 maart kunnen we weer wat sneller varen. Om 12:20 UTC zetten we het net uit op 500m op de blauwe wijting laag. Doordat de netsonar gedraaid in het net terechtkomt, kunnen we tijdens de trek niet goed zien of er iets in gaat. De vangst valt dan ook tegen: een klein vismandje blauwe wijting. Het is de vraag of dit representatief is voor wat er daar beneden zwemt.
Tuesday 27 March is a tiresome day with 8 Beaufort against us on the 55.24N transect in western direction. Our speed is 1-2 knots during the whole day: we cannot speed up since this would cause too much noise on the echogram. In the early morning of 28 March we are able to sail a little faster. At 12:20 UTC we shoot the net for the blue whiting layer at 500m. It is not possible to monitor the amount of fish that goes into the net because the net sonar is wrapped up in some meshes. The catch is indeed disappointing: a small fish basket of blue whiting. We doubt if this sample is representative for whatever is down there.

Thomas Pasterkamp en Dirk Tijssen bemonsteren het mini-trekje, ook al twijfelen we of deze trek wel representatief is voor de vis in de laag op 500m. Misschien moeten we later besluiten om dit monster niet mee te nemen in de bestandsschatting na de survey - Thomas Pasterkamp en Dirk Tijssen sample this tiny haul, although we doubt if it is representative for the fish in the layer at 500m. We might have to disregard this sample in the abundance estimation after the survey.

Om 20:30 UTC zijn we op 56.04N-12.35W en draaien oost het volgende transect op. Vlakbij dit punt nemen we een CTD (nr. 14). Om 21:50 UTC zetten we uit voor de blauwe wijting laag op 450m.
