Blauwe wijting in overvloed op de zigzag transecten - Plenty blue whiting on the zigzag transects

On the zigzag transects we clearly find ourselves amidst blue whiting. At 2:34 and 17:11 UTC we shoot the net. The catches are 3 en 1 ton (haul 5 and 6).

Trek 5, 25 maart 2018 54.12N-13.13W, 3000kg blauwe wijting (echogram is van vlak na de trek) - Haul 5, 25 March 2018 54.12N-13.13W, 3000kg blue whiting (echogram from direct after the haul.
During the remainder of the see we keep seeing blue whiting and at 17:10 UTC we shoot the net again.

Trek 6, 25 maart 2018, 54.32N-12.16W, 1000 kg blauwe wijting - Haul 6, 25 March 2018, 54.32N-12.16W, 1000 kg blue whiting.
This is how you can recognize a flying squid: the funnel (for the "jet propulsion") groove has a so-called foveola with ridges parallel to body length.

De next morning, 26 March, we arrive at the edge of the continental shelf and shoot the net for a thick, red layer at the bottom. Is this blue whiting?
Trek 7, 26 maart 2018, 54.20N-11.14W, 4750kg blauwe wijting - Haul 7, 26 March 2018, 54.20N-11.14W, 4740kg blue whiting.
The catch does consist of blue whiting. There is also a large crab in the net. It looks like a spider crab, but after searching on the internet, we suspect that this is a giant box crab (Paramola cuvieri). This is not a real spider crab, but a crab from super family of the Carrier crabs (Homolidae). Species from this group carry stuff with their hind legs. See this link. It is remarkable that it has been caught in a trawl that does not touch the bottom.

  1. Yes indeed! The giant box crab was broken in several pieces. I had to put it together for the picture. An exceptional catch anyway!
