Boegsurfers - Bowsurfers

Na trek 1 op 19 maart varen we 'savonds verder in oostelijke richting en om 21:52 UTC draaien we op 51.22N-13.30E noord naar het volgende transect. In de ochtend van zaterdag 20 maart om 7:24 UTC zien we bij het verlaten van Porcupine Bank, aan de westkant, een dikke laag blauwe wijting op het echogram. Omdat dit een N2000 natuurgebied is en we niet helemaal zeker weten of we hier volgens onze permits pelagisch mogen vissen, zetten we het net pas uit nadat we het gebied hebben verlaten. De vangst bestaat, zoals verwacht, uit blauwe wijting. 

After haul 1 on March 19, we continue sailing east in the evening and at 21:52 UTC we turn north at 51.22N-13.30E to the next transect. On the morning of Saturday March 20 at 7:24 UTC, we see a thick layer of blue whiting on the echogram as we leave Porcupine Bank, on the west side. Because this is a N2000 nature reserve and we are not quite sure if our permits allow us to fish pelagically here, we only set the net after we have left the area. The catch consists of blue whiting, as expected.

Enkele paraplu inktvissen (Histiotheutis reversa). - Some cock eyed squids (Histioteuthis reversa).

Histioteuthis reversa heeft prachtige lichtorgaantjes over het hele lichaam. - Histioteuthis reversa has beautiful light organs all over it's body.

De rugkant van de staart van twee Kroeyeri's lantaarnvissen. De onderste is een mannetje, te herkennen aan een langwerpig lichtorgaan, bij het vrouwtje ontbreekt deze. - The back of the tail of two lancetfish. The lower one is a male which can be recognized by an elongated light organ, that is missing in the female.

Na trek 2 varen we verder naar het westen. Om 14:55UTC draaien we op 51.51N-16.00W noord naar het volgende transect. We noemen de stukken tussen de onderzoekstransecten "intertransecten". Deze tellen niet mee voor het maken van de bestandsschatting, omdat deze evenwijdig aan de dieptelijnen lopen. De bestandschatting zou teveel bepaald worden door de visconcentraties op deze dieptes wanneer de intertransecten meegerekend zouden worden. De intertransecten geven ons de gelegenheid om te experimenteren en problemen met de akoestische apparatuur op te lossen. Terwijl we op zoek zijn naar een elektronische storing op het 38kHz echogram komt het bericht van de brug, dat er dolfijnen te zien zijn.

After haul 2 we sail further west. At 2:55 PM we turn north at 51.51N-16.00W to the next transect. We call the pieces between research transects "inter-transects". These are not taken into account when making the stock estimate, because they run parallel to the depth lines. The stock estimate would be too much determined by the fish concentrations at these depths if the inter-transects were included. The inter-transects give us the opportunity to experiment and solve problems with the acoustic equipment. While we are looking for an electronic interference on the 38kHz echogram, the message comes from the bridge that dolphins can be seen.
