Diepzeekardinaalvis - Deepwater cardinalfish?

After mik net haul 4, on Wednesday March 23, we are still sailing in an easterly direction. In the early evening we arrive at the edge of the continental shelf. Here we see the first echoes of fish at 250-300m. We shoot the net for haul 1 (18:00 UTC; 51.29N-11.23W). The catch consists of 3 baskets of small blue whiting and hake. Immediately after the trawl haul, we do a miknet pull (20:30 UTC No. 5). At 22:40 UTC we reach the end of the transect (51.29N-11.10W) and head north towards the next transect.

Early in the morning of Thursday, March 24, at 52.03N-11.25W, we begin the next transect, heading west. At 10:00 UTC we do a miknet pull (No. 6; 52.04N-13.18W). We sail over the Porcupine Bank (water depth is about 350m). The bluish layer above the bottom is getting stronger. When red spots appear in the layer, we decide to shoot the net for haul 2 (15:00 UTC). The catch consists almost entirely of blue whiting.

After trek 2 we sail further west. We carry out a mik net tow at 20m in the twilight (No. 7: 19:30 UTC 52.04N-14.49W). The catch finally includes a Leptocephalus larva of European eel (Anguilla): that species is actually the main target of the miknet sampling. At the western edge of Porcupine Bank, the blue whiting records thicken. We shoot the net for haul 3. The catch consists of blue whiting with a few percent meso-pelagic fish, especially Risso's barracudina (Arctozenus rissoi). There is also a little fish in the catch that we have never seen before. Is it a deepsea herring?

Severtsov's Institute of Ecology and Evolution in Moskou). We noemen hem Microichthys grandis, letterlijk: "grote kleine vis" - In the catch of haul 3 there is a fish that we do not know. It turns out to be a deepwater cardinalfish, a species of the genus Microichthys (Courtesy of Dr. Artem Prokofiev of A.N. Severtsov's Institute of Ecology and Evolution in Moscow). We now know that it is a new species. We call it Microichthys grandis, literally: "big little fish".

Het eerste transect: geen blauwe wijting, de eerste miknet hauls - The first transect: no blue whiting and the first mik net hauls

On Monday, March 21 at 19:18 UTC, we start the first transect at 51.10N-11.03W heading west. This transect continues from the edge of the continental shelf over the southern end of Porcupine Bank. After the first CTD station, we expected some blue whiting, but the echogram shows nothing of this. Tuesday 23 March at 3:00 UTC we carry out a tow with the miknet (no. 1) at 51.12N-12.54W between 30 and 50m depth. We had hoped for Leptocephalus larvae (eel larvae), but they are not in the catch, not even Cymbulia. But there are other sea butterflies, including Clio Recurva and ice lantern fish (Benthosema glaciale).

- A beautiful siphonophore. We think it might be Physophora hydrostatica. At the top right you can see the gas-filled sac (Pneumatophore), the transparent structures below that are for swimming: the nectophores. Below that are the zoids that it uses for food gathering and reproduction.

The catch contains a beautiful siphonophore. They have gas-filled blisters. These and other types of gas-bubbled siphonophores can produce very strong echoes on the echogram, creating a false bottom under which a submarine can hide.

- Part of mik net catch 2: some krill species (not further identified), arrow worms and a salp (Soestia zonerie).

The dense layer we fished through during the first mik net haul does not disappear during the day. We expected this layer to sink to form the "zigzag layer" we observe every year during this survey at about 150m. That is why we fish at it again during the day (miknet pull 2, 25m depth, 13:03 51.12N-14.58W). The catch is much less than in the previous haul. The ice lantern fish are missing in this haul.

Miknet trek 2: lichtende kwallen (Pelagia noctulica) - Mik net 2: pink mauver jelly fish (Pelagia noctulica)

After miknet trek 2, we sail further west, bending north at 18:14 UTC 51.10N-16.00W towards the next transect beginning at 51.28N-15.59W. At 19:43 we arrive there and set course to the east. At 20:04 we carry out a miknet tow at 20-30m depth (nr 3: 51.28N-15.54W). There is still no trace of blue whiting on the echosounder. Wednesday morning 3:07 UTC at 51.29N-14.29W we do another miknet tow at 30m (no. 4).

- Conger larva (Conger conger) in the catch of miknet haul 4 (in miknet haul 3 there were already three of these larvae).

IJslantaarnvis (Benthosema glaciale) in miknet-trek 4. - Glacier lanternfish (Benthosema glaciale) in mik net haul 4.

Dolfijnen voor de boeg onderweg naar St. Michaels Mount - Dolphins at the bow on our way to St. Michaels Mount

Tridens left the port of Scheveningen last Monday, March 14 at 12:00 UTC. We sail through the Channel on a beautiful and smooth sea. A few hours sailing before arriving at Lands End, the crew is already rigging up the equipment for the calibration. While they are doing that, dolphins appear in front of the bow.

- The crew assemble the rods, wire reels and CCTV cameras in preparation for calibration in Penzance Bay.

In the evening we perform all the calibrations of the 38, 70, 120 and 200 kHz transducers. Normally this is not possible in the dark, because then fish swim up from the bottom and start playing with the calibration sphere. This time, however, it goes very well. De blauwe wijting survey bijna van start: op zoek naar blauwe wijting, aallarven en zeevlinders - The blue whiting survey about to start: a quest for blue whiting, eel larvae and sea butterflies

In three days, on Monday 14 March, the blue whiting survey will start. The main goal of this annual research expedition is to make a stock estimate of blue whiting.

On board are:
Bram Couperus (WMR, cruise leader and author of this blog), Serdar Sakinan (WMR), Dirk Burggraaf (WMR), Thomas Pasterkamp (WMR), Beanne Snaar (WMR), Dirk Tijssen (Denmark, DTU-Aqua), Batikan Bilir (Technical University of Mersin, Turkey) and Danique van Wijk (Naturalis).

- Naturalis employees bring research material to the Tridens on Friday.

- The planned location at Penzance (Cornwall), near St. Michael's Mount where we will calibrate the acoustic equipment.

We zullen eerst koers zetten naar Penzance (Cornwall). Daar wordt het echolood gecalibreerd. D
it duurt enkele dagen.

We will first set course for Penzance (Cornwall). There the echo sounder is calibrated. This will take several days. Then we will sail to Cork to ensure that the crew gets their prescribed rest hours. From Cork we depart towards the starting point of the first transect at 51.10N-11.03W. This is where the actual survey begins.

The stock estimation of blue whiting takes place during the period when a large part of the stock is known to be in an area west of the British Isles, around the Porcupine and Rockall Banks. To make a reliable estimate, this area must be covered in the shortest possible time, because the fish moves quickly, which means there is a risk of missing concentrations or - conversely - that concentrations are registered twice. For that reason, 5 research vessels are sailed simultaneously: Visconde de Eza (Spain), Jakup Sverri (Faroer), Celtic Explorer (Ireland), Vendla (Norway) and Tridens (Netherlands).
- The planned transects for the five vessels participating in the blue whiting survey.

While sailing the transects, we collect echo recordings of blue whiting using the echo sounder. When we observe fish concentrations on the echogram, we fish with a pelagic trwal to collect data on the species and length composition, and - for blue whiting - length, weight, age and maturity of the individual fish. We need this information, in combination with the acoustic registrations, to make a stock estimate.

- Like lanternfish, blue whiting are so-called meso-pelagic species. These are species of the "twilight zone" between 200m and 1000m depth.

A few weeks after the research trip has ended, the tour leaders of the research vessels meet to make a joint travel report with a total stock estimation. This stock estimate, together with the international commercial catches, form the basis for the catch advice for 2023.

During the trip we collect additional data. The temperature and salinity are measured every 30 nautical miles from the surface to a depth of 1000m: a so-called CTD downcast.

When catching mackerel, we take samples from the female gonads, to research the development of the eggs.

At night we perform one or two tows with a large plankton net (a MIK net) in the upper water layers. The aim is to capture Leptocephalus larvae (eel larvae) to investigate the arrival of these larvae from the Sargosso Sea before they transform into (glass) eel and swim up the European rivers.

- This is part of the catch with a Mik net from last year. The eel larva is transparent and has the shape of a willow leaf.

The miknet catches also contain sea butterflies. This group is a very large part of the zooplankton community in the oceans. Because they need lime to make a shell, they are sensitive to ocean acidification, which in turn is caused by the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This can cause major changes in the food chain. To better understand these changes, Naturalis studies the evolution and adaptability of sea butterflies. Danique van Wijk from Naturalis joines this survey to collect research samples.

We would like to draw your attention to one of the most numerous and most beautiful sea butterflies in the Northeast Atlantic area: Cymbulia peronii. This species was nominated by Katja Peijnenburg of Naturalis and Bram Couperus of Wageningen Marine Research for the election of the mollusk of the year. The strain is one of the five nominated strains for the overall win. The prize is the mapping of all DNA information of this species. Want to know more why this is so important? Read this article on Nature Today (in Dutch) and cast your vote for this species on the mollusc of the year 2022 website. The deadline is 15 March 24:00 CET.

On Sunday 4 and Monday 5 April, with a strong wind, we sail through the Minch and between the islands south of the Hebrides and then through the Irish Sea to the very tip of Cornwall. Here we are going to calibrate the echosounder, in the shelter of the headland and with a view of St. Michael's Mount. It is partly cloudy with a strong wind from the north (N6 Beaufort).

In the morning of April 6, when we anchor, Bram notes that St. Michael's Mount is actually a kind of mini version of Mont Saint-Michel. Tiemen, mate, asks what that is. So Kinne and Bram start to explain. Tiemen's face suddenly lights up: "Oh wait! I know that ... from Bassie and Adriaan. They have been there too!!!". (for the non-Dutch readers, "Bassie en Adriaan" is a children TV program with a clown and an acrobat which run on Dutch television from 1978 to 1995)

Normally, the equipment is calibrated before the survey. You can then correct the sensitivity of the echosounder in advance and check all settings at the same time. An important advantage of calibration prior to the survey is that any problems with the software and hardware can be identified and resolved. As mentioned earlier in the first episode of this blog, Rijkswaterstaat imposed a mandatory interruption at the last minute, forcing us to start the transects right away. That is why we now carry out the calibration afterwards. This means that we have to adjust the survey data afterwards based on the calibration data.

For calibration, a metal sphere is hung under the transducers and moved throughout the sound beam. This is done using four rods with pulleys that are attached to the ship's railing, two on the starboard side and two on the port side. We have six split beam transducers (18, 38, 70, 120, 200 and 333 kHz) and a multibeam (Simrad ME70) consisting of 21 single beam transducers. These transducers are mounted in the drop keel of the Tridens. Each individual transducer can also be calibrated with different settings, for example with different pulse lengths. A calibration session in which the sphere is moved under one of the transducers takes about half an hour. Subsequently, the equipment is adjusted and this calibration session is repeated again to check whether this adjustment is really satisfactory. If not, the procedure is repeated. For the calibration of the different frequencies we use different different metal spheres, with different alloys and diameters. It is therefore also necessary to replace a sphere every now and then between the calibrations of the different frequencies. It is not possible to calibrate at night because then small fish will swim higher in the water column and will be drawn to the sphere by curiosity. You can calculate that we could be busy for a few days easily, but we have to leave tomorrow (Wednesday, April 7) at 13:00 UTC to arrive in Scheveningen on time.

There is a frequency that is essential to the conduct of the study and that is 38 kHz. This frequency is used to calculate the amount of blue whiting. So we start with that frequency with the exact same settings that were used during the study, then the other frequencies are calibrated one by one.
