Nieuw persoonlijk record diep vissen Tridens - Nieuw personal record deep fishing for Tridens

Op 27 en 28 maart doen we twee transecten over Rockall Bank. Zoals we al hadden verwacht, treffen we hier nauwelijks blauwe wijting aan. Dat het gebied rond Rockall toch wordt onderzocht tijdens de internationale blauwe wijting survey, komt doordat er in sommige jaren wel veel blauwe wijting zit. Bij gebrek aan blauwe wijting doen we een diepe trek over de bodem.
On 27 and 28 March we sail two transects across Rockall Bank. Like expected, there is hardly any blue whiting around here. The reason the area around Rockall is covered during the international survey, is that we know from experience that there might be a significant amont of blue whiting in some years. In the absence of blue whiting we carry out a deep haul at the bottom.

Deze trek zetten we een persoonlijk rekord diep vissen neer voor de Tridens! Voor het eerst gaat het net dieper dan 1000m. De onderste pees van het net gaat vlak over de bodem op ongeveer 1100m. Aangezien er in de waterkolom geen aantekeningen (echo's) van vis zijn te zien en we toch wat vangst willen, drukken we de onderkant van het net zo dicht op de bodem als we maar durven. De nieuwe kabels die aan het begin van de reis op de winches zijn gespoeld, worden nu uitgevierd tot 1700m.
This haul we establish a personal record deep fishing for Tridens! For the first time ever on board Tridens the net is lowered deeper than 1000m. The bottom rope is towed just above the bottom at approximately 1100m. As there are no recordings of fish to be seen and we really like to catch something, we pull the pelagic(!) trawl as close to the bottom as we dare. The new cables, which we winded on the winches at the beginning of this journey, are veered out to 1700m.

Het uitzetten en halen van de pelagische trawl duurt eindeloos: ongeveer twee keer een uur. Bij elkaar is de bemanning drie en een half uur bezig met deze trek. Shooting and hauling of the pelagic trawl takes forever: about two times one hour. All together, the crew spends 3 and a half hour carrying out this haul.

Het halen van het net. Hier wordt het voorste gedeelte binnengehaald. De gestrekte maaswijdte van de voorste mazen van het pelagische trawl-net is ongeveer 8m. Naar de kuil toe, worden de mazen geleidelijk kleiner. In de kuil is de maaswijdte 4 cm - Hauling the net. Here the front part is coming on board. The mesh size of the front meshes is about 8m. De vangst is een kadootje: anderhalve mand vreemde- en mooie uitziende vissen en inktvissen. The catch is a treat: one and a half basket of weird and beautiful looking fish- and squid species.

Het grootste gedeelte van de vangst bestaat uit de lantaarnvis Lampanyctis crocodilus - The bulk of the catch consists of the lantern fish Lampanyctis crocodilus

Op woensdagochtend 29 maart, bevinden we ons op het 57.36N transect, varend richting St. Kilda. Vannacht zijn we vlak langs Rockall gevaren.

De volgende dag - woensdag 29 maart - staat er een stevige oosten wind. Dat weerhoudt ons er niet van om uit te zetten om 12:00 UTC, 57.36N-11.09W op scholen blauwe wijting op ongeveer 500m diepte, langs de rand van Aton Dohrn Seamount. De vangst bestaat uit 75 kg kleine blauwe wijting. The next day - wednesday 29 March - the eastern wind has increased. This does not withhold us from shooting the net for blue whiting schools at 500m depth at 12:00 UTC, 57.36N-11.09W along the edge of Anton Dohrn Seamount. The catch consists of 75 kg small sized blue whiting.
