Een ruige start - A rough start

Visserij surveys zijn niet alleen leuk. In de loop van dinsdag werd de zee steeds onstuimiger en tegen de tijd dat we bij het begin van het transect - 51.40N – 13.30W; 2:00 NL wintertijd woensdagochtend 22 maart – konden de survey alleen op een lage snelheid starten (5-7 knopen). Gelukkig lukt het nog wel om de eerste twee hydrografische monsters te nemen (CTD’s: daarover meer in een later post van deze blog). Internet viel en valt steeds uit of is tergend traag, waardoor het lastig is om deze blog bij te houden. Fisheries surveys are not fun all the time. In the course of Tuesday (22 March) the sea became increasing rough and when we arrived at the start of the transect - 51.40N – 13.30W; 1:00 UTC on Wednesday, we were only able to survey on a very low speed (5-7 knots). Nevertheless we succeeded to take the first two hydrographical downcast samples (CTD’s: more about that in a later blog post). Internet is very unstable or is very, very slow, which makes is difficult to maintain this blog.

Gelukkig knapt het weer in de nacht van woensdag op donderdag op. Op donderdagochtend doen we een trek met het pelagische trawl-net (4300 mazen in omtrek: daar pas wel een flatgebouw in) aan de westkant van Porcupine Bank (Trek 3, 52.40N-14.49W). Doordat de trawlsonar uitvalt, weten we niet of we op de juiste diepte zitten en we zijn dus eigenlijk blind aan het vissen op ongeveer 550m.  Fortunately the weather improves during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. On Thursday morning we carry out a haul with the pelagic trawl (4300 meshes circumference: big enough to hold a flat building) at the western side of Porcupine Bank (Haul 3, 52.40N-14.49W). Because of a trawlsonar failure, we do not know whether we fish on the right depth. This means we are actually fishing blind at approximately 550m.

De vangst valt kwa hoeveelheid dan ook tegen: een mand blauwe wijting, net genoeg voor een leeftijds- en rijpheidsmonster. Er zitten wel veel lantaarnvisjes bij: met de identificatie van deze visjes zijn we meerdere uren zoet. Not surprisingly the catch is small: a basket of blue whiting, just about enough for an age- and maturity sample. There are also some lantern fishes: identifying these keeps us busy for several hours.

Naarmate we verder in oostelijke richting Porcupine opvaren, nemen de echo’s van blauwe wijting eerst toe en daarna wordt het weer minder. Midden op de bank is er alleen nog een dun laagje boven de bodem te zien. Om te checken of dit inderdaad blauwe wijting is, vissen we hierop. Met het pelagische net – dat helemaal niet is gemaakt om over de bodem te vissen – schrapen we heel zachtjes over de bodem. De vangst is 2 ton blauwe wijting (Trek 4, 16:45 UTC, 52.40N-13.30W).  While sailing further east up the Bank, the echoes of blue whiting first increase after which it becomes less. On the middle of the bank, only a thin layer on the bottom remains. In order to check whether this is still blue whiting, we fish on this layer. With the pelagic trawl – not at all made for ground fishing – we carefully scrape the bottom. The catch is 2 tons of blue whiting (Haul 5, 16:45 UTC, 52.40N-13.30W).

Er zit ook een haring haai van 1.45m en 36 kg in de vangst. Nadat we hem (het is een mannetje) hebben opgemeten, wordt hij overboord gezet. Hopelijk overleeft dit exemplaar het avontuur! There is also a porbeagle of 1.45m and 36 kg in the catch. After taking the measurements we put him (it is a male) overboard. Hopefully he survived this adventure.

In de nacht van donderdag op vrijdag komen we aan het einde van het 52.40N transect (CTD 12) zetten koers richting het noordoosten. De volgende dag, vrijdag 24 maart, is de wind gaan liggen. Wat een genot! Onze Ierse walvis- en dolfijnwaarnemers, Ailbhe Kavanagh en Gary Kett, zien een potvis in de verte. In the night from thursday to friday we arrive at the end of the 52.40N transect (CTD 12) and sail in northeastern direction. Next day, Friday 24 March, the wind almost non existing. What a treat! Our Irish whale- and dolphin observers, Ailbhe Kavanagh and Gary Kett, spot a sperm whale in the distance.

Om 12:00 UTC beginnen we aan het volgende transect (CTD 13, 53.40N-12.30W). We zetten uit op kleine rode schooltjes boven de bodem (trek 5, 53.41N-12.56W). Iedereen op de brug is er van overtuigd dat dit geen blauwe wijting is, omdat deze soort bijna altijd in losse laagvormige concentraties voorkomt. De vangst is… 5 ton blauwe wijting. Leve de wetenschap! We gaan weer verder op dit transect. Om 12:00 UTC we start on the next transect (CTD 13, 53.40N-12.30W). We should the net for small red schools above the bottom (haul 5, 53.41N-12.56W). Everone on the bridge is convinced that this is no blue whiting, because this species tends to appear is loose layer shaped concentrations. The catch is… 5 tons of blue whiting. Long live fisheries science! We continue on this transect.
