Goed weer en mooie vangsten - Good weather and nice catches

Nu het weer zo mooi is, begint deze visserij survey te lopen. Op 24 maart om 21:30 UTC 53.41N-14.02W doen we een trek op een dikke laag blauwe wijting op 350m diepte langs de westrand van Porcupine Bank. Now that the weather is good, the survey starts to run fine. On 24 March at 21:30 UTC 53.41N-14.02W we carry out at haul on a thick layer of blue whiting at 350m depth along the western edge of Porcupine Bank.

Er liggen hier trawlers te vissen. Als je in het donker op de brug komt zie je aan alle kanten de lichtjes van de trawlers op en neer dansen: dat komt doordat het schip – ondanks het mooie weer – nog behoorlijk beweegt op de deining die nu eenmaal altijd aanwezig is op de oceaan. Er zit zoveel in het net dat we besluiten om slechts de halve vangst aan boord te halen. De andere helft (ongeveer twee en een halve ton) laten we uit het net lopen: dat is voer voor vogels en dolfijnen.

There are trawlers fishing next to us. When coming into the bridge lights of trawlers are dancing up and down in the dark: this is caused by the vessel which is moving with the swell which is always present on the ocean. There is more in the net than we need. Therefore we decide to release part of the catch (an estimated 2.5 tons) out of the codend: that is food for birds and dolphins.

De volgende dag 25 maart om 18:00 UTC, vlak na het begin van het volgende transect op 55.35N-13.01W (westelijke uiteinde), schieten we het net in de schemer, in diep water voor een laag blauwe wijting op 450m diepte. De vangst is niet zo groot (345kg blauwe wijting), maar er zitten wel veel leuke meso-pelagische visjes bij!

The next day 25 March at 18:00 UTC 55.35N-13.01W, right after we started a new transect (western end), the net is shot during dusk in deep water for a layer of blue whiting at 450m depth. The catch is not large (345kg blue whiting) but it contains a lot of meso-pelagic fishes!

Dit is een internationale survey, waaraan ook Ierland, Noorwegen en de Faroer deelnemen. Het Nederlandse schip Tridens doet mee namens de EU. De vis verplaatst zich snel. Daarom is het belangrijk om met de vier deelnemende schepen het gebied zo snel mogelijk te dekken, om onder- of overschatting van het bestand te voorkomen. This is an international survey. The other participants are Ireland, Norway and the Faroes. The fish migrates fast. Therefore it is important to cover the area as fast as possible with the four participating vessels in order to avoid under- or over estimation. The Dutch vessel Tridens is representing the EU.

Op zondag 26 maart om 17:00 UTC op 56.16N-9.27W, doen we een trek langs de rand van het continentale plat: 3 ton blauwe wijting. On Sunday 26 March at 17:00 UTC at 56.16N-9.27W, we carry out a haul along the edge of the continental shelf: 3 ton blauwe wijting.
