Superspiering - Super smelt

Om middernacht in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag 26 maart varen we in westelijke richting over de rand van het continentale plat. Zoals verwacht, zit er blauwe wijting aan de grond. We vissen hierop tijdens trek 2. De vangst bestaat uit blauwe wijting en ongeveer 10% grote zilversmelt. Grote zilversmelt heeft wel wat weg van een heel grote spiering: een superspiering met grote ogen en grote schubben. Volwassen zilversmelt is ongeveer 40cm groot en kan tientallen jaren oud worden.

At midnight from Saturday to Sunday, March 26, we sail west across the edge of the continental shelf. As expected, there is blue whiting at the bottom. We fish for this during haul 2. The catch consists of blue whiting with about 10% large silver smelt. Large silver smelt looks a bit like a very large smelt: a super smelt with large eyes and large scales. Mature silver smelt is about 40cm in size and can live for decades.

Om 2:43 UTC varen we verder in westelijke richting. We zien geen blauwe wijting meer op het echogram. Om 8:23 UTC op 52.56N-16.00W varen we noordwaarts naar het volgende transect. Om 12:10 UTC op 53.29N-16.01W draaien we naar het oosten op het nieuwe transect. Wanneer we bij de rand van de bank komen, - bij het North West Porcupine Bank, een gebied met beschermde status - zien we grote concentraties blauwe wijting. We vissen hier op (trek 3), om een monster te verzamelen voor het bepalen van lengte, gewicht, leeftijd en paairijpheid.

At 2:43 UTC we continue sailing in a westerly direction. We no longer see blue whiting on the echogram. At 8:23 UTC at 52.56N-16.00W we head north in the direction of the next transect. At 12:10 UTC at 53.29N-16.01W we turn east on the new transect. When we get to the edge of the bank - at North West Porcupine Bank, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) - we see large concentrations of blue whiting. We fish for this (haul 3), to collect a sample to determine length, weight, age and maturity.

Tijdens het uitzetten van het net tijdens trek 3, zien we een mooie zonsondergang. Dat belooft niet veel goeds voor het weer in de komende dagen. - While shooting the net during haul 3, we see a beautiful sunset. That does not bode well for the weather in the coming days.

Na trek 3 varen we het transect af tot 53.29.68N-13.31.62N (23:27 UTC) op het topje van Porcupine Bank. Vanaf daar stomen we 's nachts en tot 13.41 UTC op maandag 27 maart, naar het beginpunt van het volgende transect op 54.55.46N-10.03.29W en varen in westelijke richting. Onderweg zien we veel echo's van blauwe wijting, maar we doen daar niets mee, omdat dit geen transect is en omdat we weten dat het Noorse schip, de "Vendla", dit deel van het gebied al heeft onderzocht.

After haul 3 we sail down the transect to 53.29.68N-13.31.62N (23:27 UTC) at the tip of Porcupine Bank. From there we will steam overnight and until 13:41 UTC on Monday, March 27, to the starting point of the next transect at 54.55.46N-10.03.29W and head west. Along the way we see a lot of echoes of blue whiting, but we don't do anything with it, because this is not a transect and because we know that the Norwegian ship, the "Vendla", has already explored this part of the area.
