Haring! - Herring!

Op maandag 6 april om 10:58 UTC beginnen we aan het laatste transect van deze akoestische survey vanaf 60.59.48N-5.59.86W. Tegen continentale plat van de Faeroese eilanden, zien we de eerste echo's van blauwe wijting (trek 10, 13:01 UTC).

In de nacht van maandag op dinsdag, hebben we 5 uur oponthoud, omdat de vislijn - een stalen kabel - niet goed op de rolt op de bakboord winch. Dit euvel is begonnen bij de diepe trek 9. Als de kabels niet netjes worden opgewonden, raken ze snel beschadigd. Op dinsdagochtend 7 april komen we bij de rand van het continetale plat. Tegen onze verwachting in, zien we geen blauwe wijting op het echogram. Op het plat zelf, zien we wel echo's van vis: kleine schooltjes op 50m diepte en een laag op 175m diepte. Hierop vissen we (6:23 en 8:24 UTC) tijdens trek 12 en 13. De vangst van beide trekken is haring. Er zit ook makreel door de vangsten. De conclusie is dat de echo's voornamelijk afkomstig zijn van haring, aangezien makreel op het echogram van de 38kHz slechts zwkke echo's geeft.

On the night from Monday to Tuesday, we had a 5-hour delay because the fishing line – a steel cable – was not winding properly on the port winch. This started to happen since deep haul 9. If the cables are not wound neatly, they get damaged quickly. On the morning of Tuesday, April 7, we reach the edge of the continental shelf. Contrary to our expectations, we do not see any blue whiting on the echo sounder. On the shelf itself, we see echoes of fish: small schools at 50m depth and a layer at 175m depth. We fish here (6:23 and 8:24 UTC) during hauls 12 and 13. The catch from both hauls is herring. There was also mackerel mixed in with the catch. The conclusion is that the echoes mainly came from herring, since mackerel only produces weak echoes on the 38kHz echo sounder.

Na trek 13, is het nog 15 minuten varen tot het einde van het transect op (11:22 UTC, 60.57.92N-1.52.64W). Terwijl de wind weer flink toeneemt, varen we boven de Shetland eilanden langs en buigen af naar het zuiden, naar Scheveningen. Het schip stampt flink. Hopelijk is dit morgen wat minder, zodat we ons kunnen wijden aan de rapportage.

As the wind picks up again, we sail past the Shetland Islands and turn south, towards Scheveningen. The ship is pitching heavily. Hopefully, it will be a bit calmer tomorrow so we can focus on the reporting.
