Koraal - Coral

Omdat er geen blauwe wijting te zien is op het echogram, besluiten we om weer een diepe trek te doen, trek 14 nabij Rosemary's Bank. Tijdens het uitzetten, verschijnen er zowaar echo's van blauwe wijting. As there is there is no blue whitng on the echogram, we decide to carry out another deepwater haul, haul 14 in the vicinity of Rosemary's bank. During shooting of the net, echoes of blue whiting appear!

Helaas gaat het mis tijdens deze trek. De bodem is stijler dan ingeschat en de onderkant van het net raakt de grond. Bij het halen blijkt een groot deel van de onderkant van het voornet ernstig beschadigd te zijn. Er zit zelfs een stuk koudwater koraal geklemt tussen de grote mazen van het voornet: een duidelijke aanwijzing dat het net de bodem heeft geraakt. We have bad luck during this haul. The slope is steeper than anticipated and the lower part of the frontal part of the trawl becomes heavily damaged. There is even a piece of coldwater coral stuck in the large meshes of the frontal net.

Het net kan deze survey niet meer worden gebruikt. Het zal thuis worden gerepareerd. Omdat we voor het einde van het laatste transect nog een keer willen vissen, wordt het reserve-net in gereedheid gebracht. This trawl net cannot be used anymore during this trip. As we intend to fish once more before the end of the last transect, the crew makes the spare net ready for operation.

Om te voorkomen dat het koraal verbrijzeld wordt, trekt Thomas het koraal uit het net voordat het over de rol wordt getrokken. - In order to avoid becoming crushed as the net is being hoisted over the rolling rear frame, Thomas picks it out in time.

Het is zeker niet de bedoeling om tijdens deze vis survey koraal op te vissen. Bedenk dat het koudwaterkoraal er duizenden jaren over doet om een tak van enige omvang te vormen. Gelukkig gebeurt dit bijna nooit bij het vissen met een pelagisch net. Voor reisleider Bram, is dit de eerste keer in 25 jaar visserijonderzoek dat hij diepzeekoraal ziet. We certainly do not mean to catch deep-water coral during this fish survey. It takes thousands of years to grow a branch like this. Fortunately a bycatch like this is very rare when fishing with a pelagic trawl. For cruiseleader Bram this is the first time in 25 years of sea going fisheries research that he sees deep-water coral.

De vangst bestaat uit 500kg blauwe wijting. Ook dit keer zitten er andere vissoorten in de vangst, om te beginnen black scabbardfish - tussen de aangetroffen exemplaren zit ook een andere soort, die er heel erg op lijkt (zie foto's) - en drie verschillende diepzeehaaitjes met groene ogen. The catch consists of 500kg of blue whiting. Like earlier catches, these catch have other species as well, black scabbardfish to start with - amidst these, we find a specimen which looks very similar but belongs to another species (see pictures) - and three differnt deepsea-sharks with green eyes.

De internationale survey is bijna voltooid. naar verwachting zullen we de volgende ochtend (zondag 2 april) het einde van het transect bereiken. Dat komt mooi uit, want er is sorm op komst: nu kunnen we mooi de beschutting opzoeken van een Schotse Loch. The internationale survey is almost finished.
