Blue Whiting Survey: Stornoway

Op vrijdag 27 maart om 16:00 UTC leggen we aan in de haven van Stornoway. Er zit niets anders op dan dat we de storm - of eigenlijk: twee stormen, vlak achterelkaar - uit te zitten.

On Friday, March 27 at 16:00 UTC, we dock in the port of Stornoway. There is nothing for it but to ride out the storm—or actually: two storms, one after the other.

Op zaterdag 29 maart in de middag knapt het weer op. De wind wordt minder en de zon breekt door. In de avond gaat de wind zelfs even helemaal liggen. We zitten dan tussen twee stormdepressies in. De bemanning en de onderzoekers gaan naar buiten. Sommigen gaan wandelen, anderen nemen de bus naar de Butt of Lewis en Bram gaat hardlopen.

On Saturday afternoon, March 29, the weather clears up. The wind decreases and the sun breaks through. In the evening, the wind even dies down completely for a while. We are then situated between two storm depressions. The crew and the researchers go outside. Some go for a walk, others take the bus to the Butt of Lewis, and Bram goes for a run.

Op zondag 29 maart is de wind weer stormachtig. Af en toe breekt de zon door. Tijdens de regen- en hagelbuien, neemt de wind flink toe tot wel windkracht 9 en 10.

Ondanks de wind, gaat Bram toch 75km fietsen. Tijdens de eerste helft van het rondje heeft hij de wind schuin tegen en wordt hij meerdere keren van de weggeblazen. Drie keer schuilt hij. Tussen de buien door is het toch wel erg mooi. Hier maakt hij een praatje met een schaap. - Despite the wind, Bram goes cycling 75km anyway. Het Ierse onderzoekingsvaartuig de Celtic Explorer, ligt ook in Stornoway om te schuilen voor de storm. Op maandag 30 maart gaan we er 'sochtends naartoe met een groepje onderzoekers en bemanningsleden. We krijgen een uitgebreide rondleiding van tweede stuurman Paul. 'sMiddags komt er een groep van het Ierse schip aan boord kijken van de tridens. Ze worden rondgeleid door Gerco Kuijt.

The Irish research vessel Celtic Explorer is also in Stornoway sheltering from the storm. On Monday, March 30, we go there in the morning with a small group of researchers and crew members. We receive an extensive tour from Second Mate Paul. In the afternoon, a group from the Irish ship comes aboard to take a look at the Tridens. They are guided by Gerco Kuijt.

Op maandagmiddag 31 maart om 16:00 UTC verlaat de Tridens de haven van Stornoway en zet koers naar het westelijke beginpunt - 38.35.50N-7.50.15W - van het volgende transect. Vanaf 0:40 UTC varen we op dit transect naar het westen. In de vroege ochtend, bij de rand van het continentale plat, zien we een dicht laag blauwe wijting. We vissen hierop tijdens trek 6 van vangen ruim 4 ton blauwe wijting van 21-32cm. Na deze trek varen we verder westwaarts. We blijven grote hoeveelheden blauwe wijting zien.

On Monday afternoon, March 31, at 16:00 UTC, the Tridens leaves the port of Stornoway and sets course for the western starting point – 38.35.50N-7.50.15W – of the next transect. From 0:40 UTC, we sail west on this transect. In the early morning, at the edge of the continental shelf, we see a dense layer of blue whiting. We fish for this during haul 6 and catch over 4 tonnes of blue whiting measuring 21-32 cm. After this haul, we continue sailing west. We continue to see large quantities of blue whiting.
