Zilversmelt, heek en een kaartje - Greater argentine, hake and a map

De volgende ochtend, maandag 3 april 2023, varen we een stukje van het Ierse 59.21N transect, vanaf het ondiepe water boven  het continentale plat in westelijke richting, naar het diepe water van de oceaan. Op 450m diepte zien we alleen zwakke echo's. De blauwe wijting laag bevindt zich hier op ongeveer 600m diepte. We zetten uit voor trek 12 om 5:50 UTC. In de blauwe wijting vangst zit ook grote zilversmelt en heek. Dit zijn twee soorten die we nog niet veel in de vangst hebben gehad tijdens de reis van dit jaar. Een verklaring hiervoor is dat er vrij veel blauwe wijting in het gebied zit. Hierdoor zit er langs de rand van het continentale plat meestal veel blauwe wijting hoog in de waterkolom en kunnen we een monster vangen, zonder dat we dicht bij de bodem komen. Om die reden zijn soorten die vlak boven de bodem leven, zoals grote zilversmelt en heek, minder sterk vertegenwoordigd in de vangst. In dit geval hebben we wel vrij dicht boven de bodem gevist.

The next morning, Monday 3 April 2023, we sail a section of the Irish 59.21N transect, from the shallows above the continental shelf in a westerly direction to the deep waters of the ocean. At 450m depth we only see weak echoes. The blue whiting layer is located here at about 600m depth. We shoot for haul 12 at 5:50 UTC. The blue whiting catch also contains large silver smelt and hake. These are two species we haven't had much in catch on this year's trip. An explanation for this is that there is quite a lot of blue whiting in the area. As a result, there is usually a lot of blue whiting high in the water column along the edge of the continental shelf and we can catch a sample without getting close to the bottom. For this reason, species that live close to the bottom, such as large silver smelt and hake, are less strongly represented in the catch. However, in this case we fished quite close to the bottom.

Twee halve manden met grote pijlinktvis (Todarodes sagittatus). In de voorgaande jaren vingen we slechts af en toe een exemplaar. Dit jaar zat deze soort in vrijwel elke trek. Opmerkelijk is ook dat we twee andere inktvissoorten - de slanke pijlinktvis (Illex coindetii) en de kromme pijlinktvis (Todaropsis eblanae) - nog helemaal niet hebben gevangen tijdens deze reis. Normaalgesproken zijn dit de algemeenste inktvissen in de vangsten tijdens de blauwe wijting survey. - Two half baskets of flying squid (Todarodes sagittatus). In the previous years we only caught a few specimens during a trip. This year this species was in almost every haul. It is also remarkable that we have not yet caught two other squid species - the shortfin squid (Illex coindetii) and the lesser flying squid (Todaropsis eblanae) - during this trip. These are normally the most common squid in catches during the blue whiting survey.

We verwachten slecht weer aan het einde van de dag en varen direct door naar het volgende transect van de Celtic Explorer. Om 12:47 UTC voeren we onze laatste trek (nr 13) uit. De vangst bestaat - niet onverwacht - uit blauwe wijting. Na het halen van het net, zetten we om 15:00 UTC koers naar Scheveningen.

We expect bad weather at the end of the day and sail directly to the next transect of the Celtic Explorer. At 12:47 UTC we perform our last haul (no. 13). The catch consists - not unexpectedly - of blue whiting. After hauling the net, we set course for Scheveningen at 15:00 UTC.

Op zondag 2 april 2023 komt de Tridens in de avond op het stukje transect van het Ierse onderzoeksschip de Celtic Explorer waar het kruist met de rand van het continentale plat. De Celtic Explorer is hier nog niet geweest, maar we weten uit ervaring dat er meestal wel wat blauwe wijting te vinden is. We zetten het net uit om 18:47 UTC of op een wazige laag.

On Sunday, April 2, 2023, the Tridens arrives in the evening on the transect section of the Irish research vessel, the Celtic Explorer, where it intersects with the edge of the continental shelf. Hier wordt een bijlvis (Argyropelecus olfersi) gemeten. Na trek 11, zetten we koers naar het volgende Ierse transect dat 40 mijl noordelijker ligt op 59.20N. Ook daar gaan we op zoek naar blauwe wijting tegen de rand van het continentale plat.

Einde transect maar niet einde survey - End of transects but not the end of the survey

Op donderdag 30 maart 2023 om 21:26 UTC bereiken we het einde van het transect op 56.39N-12.00W en zetten koers naar het noorden, naar het volgende transect. We bereiken het beginpunt van het transect om 5:23 UTC op 58.00N-12.00W en draaien naar het oosten. Op dit transect zin we veel blauwe wijting. We vissen twee keer, om 7:58 UTC voor trek 8 en om 13:19 UTC voor trek 9. De vangst in beide trekken bestaat uit blauwe wijting.

At 21:26 UTC on Thursday 30 March 2023, we reach the end of the transect at 56.39N-12.00W and head north to the next transect. We reach the transect starting point at 5:23 UTC at 58.00N-12.00W and turn east. There is a lot of blue whiting on this transect. We fish twice, at 7:58 UTC for haul 8 and at 13:19 UTC for haul 9. The catch in both hauls is blue whiting.

Wilko Klein met een zevenarmige octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) uit de vangst van trek 8. Kroeyers lantaarnvis (Notoscopelus kroeyerii), een van algemeenste lantaarnvissen in het noordoost Atlantisch gebied en belangrijk voedsel voor dolfijnen. - Kroeyer's lanternfish (Notoscopelus kroeyerii), one of the most common lanternfish in the Northeast Atlantic and important food for dolphins.

Hoewel we veel blauwe wijting op het echogram zien bij de rand van het continentale plat, vissen we hier niet op. De reden hiervoor is dat we van trek 8 en 9 al informatie hebben op dit transect en omdat we weten dat het Noorse schip Vendla dertig mijl ten noorden van ons ook al een trek heeft gedaan. Wanneer we bij het eindpunt van het laatste transect komen, doen we een CTD-opname (nr 16) en zetten koers naar een positie 57.39.791N-9.38.419W waar het Ierse schip de Celtic Explorer vanmiddag veel blauwe wijting heeft gezien. De Celtic Explorer kan sinds een week niet vissen, vanwege materiaalpech. De komende dagen zal de Tridens enkele vistrekken uitvoeren voor de Celtic Explorer. Morgen - zaterdag 1 april - liggen we in Stornoway op het eiland Lewis.

Om 22:30 UTC komen aan op de locatie waar de Celtic Explorer eerder vandaag echo's van blauwe wijting meldde. We worden niet teleurgesteld. Op het echogram verschijnt een dikke laag groenrode laag: blauwe wijting. We zetten uit voor trek 10. We zijn niet de enigen die hier vissen. Er liggen onder meer vier Nederlandse pelagische trawlers: Frank Bonefaas, Afrika, Dirk Dirk en Helen Mary.
