After haul 12 we finish the transect to the east. At 14:20 UTC we turn northeast at 58.11N-8: 37W and start at 18:32 UTC from 58.50N-7: 23W on the next westbound transect.  On this transect we do not see any blue whiting on the echogram. Bad weather is expected. This means that we will have to finish our contribution to this international study on the night of Saturday 3 to Sunday 4 April and there is not much time left. We cut a section of transect by heading north on Saturday, April 3 at 6:05 UTC at 58.51N-10.48W and beginning the final transect at 14:24 UTC at 59.31N-10.48W eastward.

We do not see blue whiting on this transect either. At 18:20 UTC at 59.32N-7: 55W at dusk we carry out a haul just above the bottom at 960m. It's dark when we haul the net up. Tom and Thomas Smith work with the crew to remove the caught fish from the meshes of the net to prevent them from being damaged when the net is wound onto the net spool.

- Haul 13, 3 april, 59.32N-7:55W, the crew and researchers pick the fragile fishes from the meshes te prevent these from further damage.

- The catch is brought to the lab to be sorted.

- Sorting of the catch is a lot of work. Ultimately we will find 43 fish - and squid species.

After haul 13 we continue to just over the edge of the continental shelf. Meanwhile, the wind is increasing up to 8 beaufort. At 1:29 UTC at 59.31N-6.30W we stop and head for the Minch to sail south in the shelter of the Hebrides.

De eerste blauwe wijting sinds een week - The first blue whiting in a week

On Thursday morning April 1, we are still slowly sailing east on the 56.40N transect, but the wind dies down during the day. What a relief! At 15:06 UTC at 56.40N-12.00W we turn north, leaving the transect and sail at high speed to the next transect. We arrive there at 22.53 UTC and sail north from 58.11.47N-12.00.62W.

The next day, Good Friday, April 2, when we reach the edge of the continental shelf, we see moderate records of blue whiting on the echogram. At 7:51 UTC we fish for haul 12. The catch consists of blue whiting with about 20% lanternfish.

Trek 12, 2 april, 58.11.44N-9.3047W, 125 kg blauwe wijting en 15kg lantaarnvisjes. - Haul 12, 2 April, 58.11.44N-9.30.47W, 125kg blue whiting and 15kg lanternfish.

- The blue whiting falls from the feed conveyor onto the sorting conveyor. The lantern fish stick to the plastic flap.

- On the plastic flap from the elevator conveyor to the sorting belt, you can already see species, apart from blue whiting, in the catch: glacier lanternfish (Benthosema glaciale), lancetfish of Kroyer's lanternfish (Notoscopelus kroyeri), Spotted lanternfish (Myctophum punctatum; 1 specimen, center left) and Atlantic barracudina (Lestidium atlanticum).

- Gijs Duin helps Tom to sort the lanternfish and barracudinas. Note that they keep 1.5m distance in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Een betere krill-vanger dan het Miknet - A better krill catcher than the Mik net

Of blauwe wijting? Toch geen makreel?

On March 31, we struggle to make progress against the strong wind in a westerly direction. After we have not seen blue whiting on the 56.04N transect for 60 miles, we can assume that there is no blue whiting to the west and can move to the next transect. That is good, because as a result of the bad weather we are running out of time. At 9:47 UTC we turn north at 56.03N-14.22W. Unfortunately, the wind also turns from west to north, making it difficult for us to make progress again. On this intertransect we see a thin red-green layer stiff on the bottom on top of Rockall Bank at a depth of 190m. After turning east on the new transect at 17:27 UTC at 56.39.20N-14.25.53W, we start fishing for that layer. We have no idea what it is when setting the net. Is it horse mackerel? Or blue whiting? Not mackerel after all?

Trek 11, 31 maart 2021, 56.39.32N-14.21.11W, 365kg grauwe poon (Eutriglia gurnardi). - Haul 11, 31 March 2021, 56.39.32N-14.21.11W, 365kg grey gurnard (Eutriglia gurnadi).

During haul 11 the wind increases considerably from 6 to 8-9 Beaufort. During the retrieval, the net blows over a capstan on deck, causing the net to tear. The net is simply wound onto the net roll with the damaged part. The catch is ... grey gurnard (Eutrigla gurnardus). Nobody expected that on board. The catch is clean, that is to say there is really nothing else in it than grey gurnard. The gurnard is measured. Some specimens are cut open. The stomachs are full of northern krill (Meganyctiphanes norvegica) measuring about 3 cm. We have not yet encountered krill of that size in the Miknet catches. Hence, grey gurnard is a better krill catcher than the Miknet!

- Immediately after haul 11, despite the seastate, the crews unrolls the trawl net until the damaged part and start mending the teared section.

- The catch of haul 11 consists entirely from grey gurnard.

Grauwe poon (Eutrigla gurnardus). - Grey gurnard (Eutrigla gurnardus).

- The stomach contents of three grey gurnards: northern krill (Meganyctiphanes norvegica).

- The size and structure of the gonads show that the grey gurnards are about to spawn.

We fished with the wind and after ahuling, the wind has become so strong that it takes us two hours to get back to where we can pick up the transect again. Because the wind has now turned to ENE, we have to survey against the wind again.

Tridens onderzoekers vangen reusachtige krab bij hydrografische meting - Tridens researchers catch giant crab during hydrographic measurement

In a hydrographic measurement of salinity and temperature, crew and researchers were surprised today by a huge crab hanging from their measuring equipment. The animal hung on a so-called CTD that was lowered to 1000m. This CTD continuously measures the temperature and salinity, so that a recording of each depth layer is obtained. The CTD is not a device for catching animals and it is therefore very exceptional that a living organism is brought to the surface. Incidentally, the crab fell back into the water before it could be taken on board. Fortunately, crew member and amateur fotographer Albert de Boer was quick and was able to take a picture before it disappeared into the depths again. The other crew members were very shocked by the incident, but can now laugh about it.

We zullen onze protokollen moeten herzien.

1 april !!!

It is a giant carrier crab (Paromola cuvieri). It is really a very special observation! This species lives on the bottom. The fact that he has stuck to the CTD indicates that this sensitive and expensive equipment has been close to the bottom and that is definitely not the intention. We will have to revise our protocols.

Captain Kinne Reichgeld reported the event by satellite telephone to the owner of the ship, the Rijksrederij. The shipowner has indicated that the crew must make an incident report about this event. Pending the report, the crew is not allowed to take any CTD recordings on board the Tridens.

April's fool !!!

Akoestische zigzag-laag: macroplankton of lichtend sprotje? - Scattering layer: macro plankton or pearlside?

Overdag vorderen we langszaam.

In the early morning of Tuesday March 30, Tridens struggles westward against the wind at a speed of about 4 knots. In the early morning we pass the edge of the continental shelf and see quite a lot of blue whiting. Due to the wind, we decide not to fish here. During the day we progress slowly. In the afternoon the wind dies down. At 2:27 pm we carrry out a haul with the Mik net on the acoustic layer at about 140m, which we have come to call "zigzag layer". The modest catch consists of amphipods, pteropods and northern krill (Meganyctiphanes norwegica).

- Haul 10 and Miknet tow 5, March 30, 2021, 55.50N-11.37W on the "zigzag layer" at about 140m. The trawl catch consists of large quantities of pearlside (Maurolicus muelleri) that is caught between the meshes and falls on the deck during hauling.

Because we doubt whether the little macroplankton found in the Miknet sample is responsible for the fairly strong echoes in the zigzag layer, we decide to also fish through the layer with the pelagic trawl. During the haul we see many schools entering the net. When hauling, we see almost nothing of this in the codend. The very small catch consists of fish of a few centimeters. When fishing, the majority of them escaped through the large mesh of the front net.

- On the screen of the net sonar you can see how one school after another enter the net.

Een geplande rustperiode halverwege de survey - A planned rest period halfway the survey

On the morning of Thursday, March 25, as Tridens approaches the edge of the continental shelf, a layer of blue whiting appears on the echogram. At 3:05 UTC we stop to set out for haul 8.

Dolfijnen (Delphinus delphis) voor de boeg. - Dolphins (Delphinus delphis) at the bow.

Trek 8, 25 maart 2021, 54.51.17N-10.57.23W, 365kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 8, 25 March 2021, 54.51.17N-10.57.23W, 365kg blue whiting.

De vangst van trek 8 in de last. - The catch of haul 8 in the hold.

During haul 8 we had already noticed that there was a strong acoustic layer at about 130m. After the pull, we take a sample of this with the Miknet (Miknet haul 4). The catch is comparable to the previous tow: again there are Leptocephalus larvae, pteropods (Clio recurva) and amphipods in the sample.

The Aquascat is a small, high frequency echosounder that we connect to the Mik net.

- Miknet haul 4 is aimed at the acoustic layer at 130m. On the red-yellow layer at 450m we fished with the pelagic trawl in haul 8.

- Miknet tow 4, using the depth measurements of the Aquascat, Serdar has reconstructed the trajectory of the miknet while fishing through the scattering layer.

We varen verder in oostelijke richting.
We sail further in easterly direction. The blue whiting records become very strong. We fish on the layer just above the bottom at about 350m. To avoid catching too much, we have to lift the trawl soon after reaching at the layer. The catch consists of a large amount of blue whiting.

Trek 9, 25 maart 2021, 54.51.72N-10.19.06W, 4500kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 9, 25 March 2021, 54.51.72N-10.19.06W, 4500kg blue whiting.

- Trawl sonar screen while lowering the trawl net. Just before it reaches the bottom, you can see how the blue whiting escape under the bottom rope.

- An exceptionally large blue whiting in the catch of haul 9.

Tridens then sets sail for Londonderry for the 72-hour rest period announced in the first episode of this blog. Including the sailing back and forth, this means a forced interruption of four and a half days. Fortunately, the disruption in Londonderry coincides with bad weather in the research area. Even without interruption, we would probably have stopped the survey on Saturday, 25 - and Sunday 26 March. We may have had to take shelter in a bay. Londonderry is just outside the storm's zone, making the weather relatively calm when we dock at 7:05 UTC on Friday morning. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, everyone has to stay on board during the break.

Slecht weer en opnieuw Leptocephalus larven - Bad weather and again Leptocephalus larvae

In the night of Monday March 22 to Tuesday March 23, the weather deteriorates. We are forced to slow down (5 instead of 10 knots) to avoid too much interference on the echogram. We are sailing towards the east and the wind is from the southwest. With the wind at an angle from behind, it is not too bad with the disturbance. At 23:12 UTC we turn north at 53.14.80N-13.30.70W and at 2:07 UTC we turn west on the new transect at 53.44.03N-13.31.17W. From that moment on, the ship starts pitching on the waves and the disturbance on the echogram increases dramatically. Leaving Porcupine Bank on the west side, we see a lot of blue whiting, but we decide not to fish because of the wind that is about 8 Beaufort at the time.

During the day on Tuesday, March 23, we slowly keep sailing west. We observe a small school now and then, but that is not enough to fish upon. That is not so bad, because it is still windy.

Op 23 Maart 2021 waait het stevig. - On 23 March 2021 there is a strong breeze.

We sail very slowly against the wind to the west. To avoid running out of time later, we skip the last 20 miles of the transect and turn to NNE at 14:53 at 53.44N-15.27W on the next transect. On this NNO transect we are able to sail again 10 knots without interference on the echogram. At 21:32 UTC at 54.40N-15.05W we turn to SSO. This is another slow and difficult transect with a lot of interference on the echogram. Fortunately, since we do not observe blue whiting, this makes no difference to the quality of the data collected. Wednesday, March 24 at 4:49 UTC at 53.19N-14.44W we turn NNE again, giving us the wind from behind. At 12:00, after the CTD station at 54.48N-14.22W, we turn east. We don't see blue whiting all day long.
The weather has improved somewhat and we decide to do a haul with the Miknet in the acoustic layer at 130m at 14.31 UTC, 54.49N-13.41W. The catch is varied. It also contains two Leptacephalus larvae of eel (Anguilla anguilla).

- Mik net haul 3, 24 March 2021, is directed towards the scattering layer at approximately 130m.

- In the sample of the mik net are Leptocephalus larvae (eel larvae), pearlside (Maurolicus muelleri), amphipods and young squid.

- The wavy clio (Clio recurva) is a snail species with a pointed and flattened shell. This species is a good swimmer. The mantle has been transformed into two wings, with which it moves through the water like a butterfly.

Een jonge pijlinktvis en een amphipode. - A young squid and an amphipod.
