Langzame raai - Slow transect

Tuesday 27 March is a tiresome day with 8 Beaufort against us on the 55.24N transect in western direction. Our speed is 1-2 knots during the whole day: we cannot speed up since this would cause too much noise on the echogram. In the early morning of 28 March we are able to sail a little faster. At 12:20 UTC we shoot the net for the blue whiting layer at 500m. It is not possible to monitor the amount of fish that goes into the net because the net sonar is wrapped up in some meshes. The catch is indeed disappointing: a small fish basket of blue whiting. We doubt if this sample is representative for whatever is down there.

Trek 8, 28 maart, 30kg blauwe wijting - Haul 8, 28 March, 30kg blue whiting.
We might have to disregard this sample in the abundance estimation after the survey.

At 20:30 UTC we are at 56.04N-12.35W and turn east on the next transect. Close to this point we take a CTD (no. 14). At 21:50 we shoot the net for the blue whiting layer at 450m.

Blauwe wijting in overvloed op de zigzag transecten - Plenty blue whiting on the zigzag transects

On the zigzag transects we clearly find ourselves amidst blue whiting. At 2:34 and 17:11 UTC we shoot the net. The catches are 3 en 1 ton (haul 5 and 6).

Trek 5, 25 maart 2018 54.12N-13.13W, 3000kg blauwe wijting (echogram is van vlak na de trek) - Haul 5, 25 March 2018 54.12N-13.13W, 3000kg blue whiting (echogram from direct after the haul.
During the remainder of the see we keep seeing blue whiting and at 17:10 UTC we shoot the net again.

Trek 6, 25 maart 2018, 54.32N-12.16W, 1000 kg blauwe wijting - Haul 6, 25 March 2018, 54.32N-12.16W, 1000 kg blue whiting.
This is how you can recognize a flying squid: the funnel (for the "jet propulsion") groove has a so-called foveola with ridges parallel to body length.

De next morning, 26 March, we arrive at the edge of the continental shelf and shoot the net for a thick, red layer at the bottom. Is this blue whiting?
Trek 7, 26 maart 2018, 54.20N-11.14W, 4750kg blauwe wijting - Haul 7, 26 March 2018, 54.20N-11.14W, 4740kg blue whiting.
The catch does consist of blue whiting. There is also a large crab in the net. It looks like a spider crab, but after searching on the internet, we suspect that this is a giant box crab (Paramola cuvieri). This is not a real spider crab, but a crab from super family of the Carrier crabs (Homolidae). Species from this group carry stuff with their hind legs. See this link. It is remarkable that it has been caught in a trawl that does not touch the bottom.

Zigzaggen - ZigZagging

It is 18:00 UTC, we are at 54.13N-13.59W. We have started to sail the zigzag transcts along the northern border of Porcupine Bank. This afternoon we encountered large quantities of blue whiting at 54.04N-14.10W at approximately 500m depth. We shot the net on this layer. This resulted in a catch of approximately four tons in the size range of 23-34cm.

Tridens set course to the start of the next transect at 53.25N-12.30W. We arrived there at 21:45.

This morning, 23 March at 9:00 UTC we shot the net for several layers of blue whiting at the western edge of Porcupine Bank. The net is being hauled soon after the targeted depth has been reached, to avoid a too large catch. Nevertheless the codend contains more than 5 tons.

The codend of the trawl starts to drift due to the expansion of the swimbladders of the fishes when the net is being hauled up from the deep. In this case the fish was caught at 600m.

The rest of the transect the zee is turbulent despite the fact that there is not much wind. This is caused by a gale little south of our position.

Helaas hebben we wel last van de swell die door de storm wordt veroorzaakt - South of us is a gale, while we find ourselves in the centre of the low pressure area where there is hardly any wind. However we experience the swell that is caused by the gale.

Start van de blauwe wijting survey - editie 2018! / Start of the blue whiting survey - edition 2018!

Since yesterday morning (Tuesday 20 March) the blue whiting survey started. Last week we calibrated the acoustic equipment in Bantry Bay, Ireland. Initially we had hoped to calibrate at St. Michaels Mount near Land's End like we did last year, but the weather conditions did not allow this. Even in the shelter of Bear Island the anchor did not hold because of the hard wind. In the end we were forced to sail deep into the bay. The calibration itself was carried out without major problems.

The southern wind is too strong for the anchor to get hold, even in the shelter of Bearhaven (at the entrance of Bantry Bay).

After a long weekend in Cork from 16 to 19 March, Tridens left at 15:00 UTC from the port of Cork. On the way to the starting point of the survey (51.14N – 13.00W) we carried out a test haul close to the coast: there was no catch except for some sprat sticking in the meshes. The actual survey started on Tuesday 20 March at 7:00 UTC. On the first transect we did not see any recordings of blue whiting on the echogram. On the 52.06N transect we did encounter blue whiting. By now we have conducted two hauls of more than 3 tons of blue whiting each.

On our way to Scheveningen, we carry out a trial haul with the new camera-sonar information system. We do this with the 2000M trawl that we use in the North Sea acoustic survey for herring and sprat in summer. The trawlsonar and the schosounder give a good picture, but this is certainly not true for the camera. Of the 1000 kg herring catch, we have not seen anything on the screen: the image is to blurry and very unstable. Possibly this is due to the electrical old cable we use. We will work hard to get it in working order before the herring survey.

Today, thursday 6 april, we are homeward bound. Tomorrow morning we will be at the quay in Scheveningen. For  us - the Dutch vessel Tridens - the survey comes to an end now. The Norwegians and the Irish are also ready. The Faroes are on their last transects. During the herring survey in July we will keep a blog again. CU.

Beschutting en calibratie in Loch Eriboll - Shelter and calibration in Loch Eriboll

On Sunday 2 april at 5:00 UTC, we arrive at the end of our last transect at 59.30N - 6.00W. This is the postition of our last CTD (no. 35). Two hours before we crossed the edge of the shelf. As mentioned before in this blog, the chance to see blue whiting at the shelf edge is big and our plan was to fish at that location. Indeed we saw blue whiting on the echogram. However, the edge appeared to be extremely steep at that location so that we decided against shooting the net.

Ierland is bijna klaar. Tridens(NL) has covered her part. Ireland is almost there. Norway has a few more days to go. The Faroese vessel has just started
While sailing towards Loch Eriboll at the northern coast of Scotland, the crew and the scientists watch the Ajax - Feyenoord football derby (2-1) except for Bram, who watches the Tour of Flanders.

Locatie in Loch Eriboll, waar de akoestische apparatuur wordt gecalibreerd - Location in Loch Eriboll where the acoustic equipment is being calibrated
In the evening the crew is building up the equipment - 4 sturdy rods, with winches and CCTV camera's - on the front deck. The weather is still nice: by sailing further west, we have extended the moment the gale is going to hit us.

Mooi weer bij aankomst in Loch Eriboll - Nice weather at arrival in Loch Eriboll
Na anderhalf uur gehannes, is alles klaar - Dirk, Thomas en Bram have some problems with the lines on which the two calibration spheres will be hanging. One of the lines gets stuck somewhere, possibly behind a zinc anode on the vessels hull (on the hull of sea going vessel are pieces of zinc fastened to avoid corrosion). After one and a half hour of trying, everything is ready.

Dirk Burggraaf met een van zijn (calibratie-)ballen: wolfraamcarbide met een diameter van 38mm voor de calibratie van de 38-, 70,-  en 120kHz tranducers (voor de calibratie van de 18Khz transducer gebruikt Dirk zijn andere bal van koper met een diameter van 63mm) - Dirk Burggraaf with one of his (calibration-)balls: tungstencarbide with a diameter of 38mm for the calibration of the 38-, 70- and 120kHz transducers (for the calibration of the 18 kHz transducer, Dirk uses his other ball of copper with a diameter of 63mm)

The aluminium bar is one of the 4 "rods" that will enable us to  steer the ball through the sound beam of the transducer
The next day we calibrate the equipment, while the wind increases in the course of the day. Fortunately before the evening we manage to calibrate the essential transducers, because from that moment on the gale really starts, with in the night blows of 9 to 10 beaufort. The anchor scratches over the bottom. Extra chain is fed and the whole night one of the engines is running. The calibration equipment is still on deck. The researchers are worried that it will become damaged.

The lower screen gives view on the rod-winches with the lines holding the sphere's.

Loch Eriboll op dinsdagochtend 4 april - Loch Eriboll on tuesday morning 4 april
The next morning Tuesday 4 April the gale is over, but the wind is still strong. We dismantle the calibration equipment: we are happy to see that everything is still undamaged after the gale. We leave Loch Eriboll and sail through the Pentland Firth with the wind in the back.
