Beschutting en calibratie in Loch Eriboll - Shelter and calibration in Loch Eriboll

Op zondag 2 april om 5:00 UTC, komen we aan bij het einde van het laatste transect op 59.30N - 6.00W. Dit is de positie van onze laatste CTD (nr. 35). Twee uur daarvoor zijn we de rand van het continentale plat gepasseerd. Zoals eerder vermeld in deze blog, zit er langs de rand van het plat meestal wel wat blauwe wijting en het plan was dan ook om op die locatie te vissen. Er was inderdaad blauwe wijting te zien met het echolood. De rand van het plat bleek op deze plek echter zo stijl dat vissen niet verantwoord zou zijn.
On Sunday 2 april at 5:00 UTC, we arrive at the end of our last transect at 59.30N - 6.00W. This is the postition of our last CTD (no. 35). Two hours before we crossed the edge of the shelf. As mentioned before in this blog, the chance to see blue whiting at the shelf edge is big and our plan was to fish at that location. Indeed we saw blue whiting on the echogram. However, the edge appeared to be extremely steep at that location so that we decided against shooting the net.

Terwijl we naar Loch Eriboll varen, kijken bemanning en onderzoekers naar Ajax - Feyenoord (2-1), behalve Bram: die kijkt naar de Ronde van Vlaanderen. While sailing towards Loch Eriboll at the northern coast of Scotland, the crew and the scientists watch the Ajax - Feyenoord football derby (2-1) except for Bram, who watches the Tour of Flanders.

In de avond brengt de bemanning de calibratie opstelling - 4 stevige hengels met elk een winch en een CCTV camera - in gereedheid op het voordek. Het is nog steeds mooi weer: door verder naar het westen te varen, hebben we het moment uitgesteld waarop we de storm over ons heen krijgen. In the evening the crew is building up the equipment - 4 sturdy rods, with winches and CCTV camera's - on the front deck. The weather is still nice: by sailing further west, we have extended the moment the gale is going to hit us.

Dirk, Thomas en Bram hebben wat problemen met de draden waaraan de twee calibratie-bollen onder het schip moeten komen te hangen. Een van de draden blijft ergens achter hangen, mogelijk achter een zink-anode op de scheepsromp (op de romp van zeegaande schepen zitten plaatjes zink: deze voorkomen dat de romp wegroest). Na anderhalf uur gehannes, is alles klaar - Dirk, Thomas en Bram have some problems with the lines on which the two calibration spheres will be hanging. One of the lines gets stuck somewhere, possibly behind a zinc anode on the vessels hull (on the hull of sea going vessel are pieces of zinc fastened to avoid corrosion). After one and a half hour of trying, everything is ready.

Eric Armstrong, onze Schotse akoesticus inspecteert de opstelling voor de calibratie. De volgende dag calibreren we de apparatuur, terwijl de wind in de loop van de dag steeds meer toeneemt. Gelukkig zijn de essentiele calibratie's voor het onderzoek 's avonds klaar, want vanaf dat moment gaat het echt stormen, met in de nacht vlagen van windkracht 9 en 10. Het anker "krabt" over de bodem. Er wordt extra ketting gegeven en de hele nacht houden we de motor aan. De calibratie-apparatuur is dan nog niet afgebroken. De onderzoekers maken zich dan ook zorgen of de boel niet kapot waait - The next day we calibrate the equipment, while the wind increases in the course of the day. Fortunately before the evening we manage to calibrate the essential transducers, because from that moment on the gale really starts, with in the night blows of 9 to 10 beaufort. The anchor scratches over the bottom. Extra chain is fed and the whole night one of the engines is running. The calibration equipment is still on deck. The researchers are worried that it will become damaged.

De volgende ochtend op dinsdag 4 april is de storm voorbij, maar het waait het nog steeds hard. We breken de calibratie opstelling af. Gelukkig is alles nog heel na de storm. We verlaten Loch Eriboll en met de wind in de rug, varen we door de Pentland Firth (de zeestraat tussen Schotland en Orkney) - The next morning Tuesday 4 April the gale is over, but the wind is still strong. We dismantle the calibration equipment: we are happy to see that everything is still undamaged after the gale. We leave Loch Eriboll and sail through the Pentland Firth with the wind in the back.
