Zeezoogdierenwaarnemers - Marine Mammal Observers

Today some information about the observers on top of the wheel house.

Soms zien we uren achtereen niets.

The job of a Marine Mammal Observer (MMO for short) in Irish waters is not an easy one, although it is very enjoyable. A lot of patience, dedication, and observational vigilance is required. Not to mention, it can get quite cold spending hours on top of the ship. But it is a highly rewarding position, as MMOs get the best view of gorgeous sunrises, sunsets, and an apex perspective on the marine life around us. Primarily Ailbhe and Gary are searching for cetaceans which is the order of marine mammals which includes whales, dolphins and porpoises. And although they may go many hours without seeing anything, when a sighting event does occur, it can be very exciting indeed.
It is quite fulfilling to collect data on such elusive species. Marine mammals only spend around 3% of their time at the surface of the water, so any sighting is a special event.

This year in particular (2017) marks the 25th anniversary of the Irish waters being officially delared a whale and dolphin sanctuary, the first of its kind in Europe. In total, 25 different species of cetacean have been recorded around Ireland, thats almost one third of the total whale and dolphin species in the world! Even though most of these species are infrequently seen, the 12 of our more regularly seen species are equally fascinating. This highlights the importance of Irish waters for these animals, with a wide range of habitats from the ocean depths to the coastal edge offering rich feeding grounds, nursing areas and migration routes for a wide variety of marine mammals.

Sighting conditions up above the wheel house were ideal this morning! Calm waters and light winds means that marine mammals should be easier to spot if they are out there. The main cues to look out for are splashes, dark pointed or curved fins, or the characteristic whale blow. With everything set up the MMOs didn’t have to wait long for the first sighting of the day. At about 8:30 a small sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) about 13 or 14m in length surfaced about 150m from the vessel. The animal lay resting at the surface, a behaviour we call logging, and was seen taking lots of breaths after what was probably a long dive. The breaths were visible as a plume of water vapour (or blow). Sperm whales are most often seen in Irish waters in the Rockall trough in waters deeper than 1000m between february and September (Wall et al. 2013).

The equipment of an MMO is pretty simple; GPS, tablet to record weather conditions and sightings, binoculars, camera, sunglasses

First sighting of the day was a small sperm whale logging at the surface.

The red bubbles give relative abundance

In the afternoon Soeren and Felix joined the MMOs to check out what they do outside all day. They were lucky to see a large group of 50 common dolphins, unfortunately the dolphins didn’t come close to the vessel… Ailbhe and Gary are not sure we will be able to convert these two to MMO's just yet.

Soeren en Felix komen de zeezoogdierenwaarnemers gezelschap houden - Soeren and Felix come up to join the MMO's.
The MMOs were also fortunate to have sightings of a Great Skua, lots of gannets, fulmars, and Kittiwakes throughout the day.

In total since the beginning of the trip, the MMOs have been kept busy with a total of 8 cetacean species. The list so far includes harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), common dolpin (Delphinus delphis), the offshore ecotype of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), Longfinned pilot whale (Globicephala malaena), minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) and one sighting of an unidentified species of beaked whale.

While originally on our way from 56.16N-12.24W to the next transect at 57.56N-12.00W, we received this morning a request from the Faroese coordinator to adjust our plan and first cover the Irish transects at 56.56N en 57.56N. As a result we are steaming now back our position at 11:00 UTC 57.31N-12.05W back to our new starting point 56.56N-12.00W. The Norwegians will then take over two of our transects north of Rockall.

Goed weer en mooie vangsten - Good weather and nice catches

Now that the weather is good, the survey starts to run fine. On 24 March at 21:30 UTC 53.41N-14.02W we carry out at haul on a thick layer of blue whiting at 350m depth along the western edge of Porcupine Bank.

Trek 6, 24 maart 2017, 53.41N-14.02W, 5 ton blauwe wijting - Haul 6, 24 March 2017, 53.41N-14.02W, 5 tons blue whiting

There are trawlers fishing next to us. When coming into the bridge lights of trawlers are dancing up and down in the dark: this is caused by the vessel which is moving with the swell which is always present on the ocean. There is more in the net than we need. Therefore we decide to release part of the catch (an estimated 2.5 tons) out of the codend: that is food for birds and dolphins.

The next day 25 March at 18:00 UTC 55.35N-13.01W, right after we started a new transect (western end), the net is shot during dusk in deep water for a layer of blue whiting at 450m depth. The catch is not large (345kg blue whiting) but it contains a lot of meso-pelagic fishes!

This is an international survey. The other participants are Ireland, Norway and the Faroes. The fish migrates fast. Therefore it is important to cover the area as fast as possible with the four participating vessels in order to avoid under- or over estimation. The Dutch vessel Tridens is representing the EU.

Een ruige start - A rough start

Fisheries surveys are not fun all the time. In the course of Tuesday (22 March) the sea became increasing rough and when we arrived at the start of the transect - 51.40N – 13.30W; 1:00 UTC on Wednesday, we were only able to survey on a very low speed (5-7 knots). Nevertheless we succeeded to take the first two hydrographical downcast samples (CTD’s: more about that in a later blog post). Internet is very unstable or is very, very slow, which makes is difficult to maintain this blog.

Weerkaart voor dinsdagavond 21:00 UTC - Weather chart for Tuesday 21:00 UTC

Fortunately the weather improves during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. On Thursday morning we carry out a haul with the pelagic trawl (4300 meshes circumference: big enough to hold a flat building) at the western side of Porcupine Bank (Haul 3, 52.40N-14.49W). Because of a trawlsonar failure, we do not know whether we fish on the right depth. This means we are actually fishing blind at approximately 550m.
Het net wordt gehaald. Hier zie je de grote mazen van het voornet - The trawl is being hauled. Here you can see the large meshes of the front-net

Trek 3, 23 maart 2017, 52.40N-14.49W: 1 mand blauwe wijting en lantaarnvisjes – Haul 3, 23 March 2017, 52.40N-14.49W: 1 basket blue whiting and lantern fishes

Not surprisingly the catch is small: a basket of blue whiting, just about enough for an age- and maturity sample. There are also some lantern fishes: identifying these keeps us busy for several hours.

While sailing further east up the Bank, the echoes of blue whiting first increase after which it becomes less. On the middle of the bank, only a thin layer on the bottom remains. In order to check whether this is still blue whiting, we fish on this layer. With the pelagic trawl – not at all made for ground fishing – we carefully scrape the bottom. The catch is 2 tons of blue whiting (Haul 5, 16:45 UTC, 52.40N-13.30W).

Trek 4, 23 maart 2017, 52.40N-13.30W: 2 ton blauwe wijting – Haul 4, 23 March 2017,52.40N-13.30W: 2 tons blue whiting

There is also a porbeagle of 1.45m and 36 kg in the catch. After taking the measurements we put him (it is a male) overboard. Hopefully he survived this adventure.

In the night from thursday to friday we arrive at the end of the 52.40N transect (CTD 12) and sail in northeastern direction. Next day, Friday 24 March, the wind almost non existing. What a treat! Om 12:00 UTC we start on the next transect (CTD 13, 53.40N-12.30W). We should the net for small red schools above the bottom (haul 5, 53.41N-12.56W). Everone on the bridge is convinced that this is no blue whiting, because this species tends to appear is loose layer shaped concentrations. The catch is… 5 tons of blue whiting. Long live fisheries science! We continue on this transect.

This morning at 7:00 UTC we left Cork. The weather in Cork is nice: partly clouded and not too much wind.

Afscheid van Cork. Good bye to Cork.

We are leaving the natural port of Cork (fun fact: Cork has the second largest natural harbour in the world) and lower the drop keel at 9:30 UTC. From now on we are heading towards the start of the first transect. We will arrive there sometime during the night.

Meanwhile it has been a week ago that Tridens left the port of Scheveningen on 13 March at 10:00 UTC. As there were some low pressure areas on their way from the west, we changed the location and the time for the calibration of the acoustic equipment: instead of Wednesday in Bantry Bay, we went to work on Tuesday afternoon at Lands End near St. Michaels Mount, Cornwall.

Calibration location of the acoustic equipment.

During this survey we operate an echosounder (a Simrad EK60) to make an estimation of the stock size of blue whiting west of the British Isles. For this we need to know the sensitivity of the eschosounder. A metal sphere is positioned under the vessel (by means of four rods with fishing rope) in the sound beam of the echosounders which are mounted in the drop keel. During the survey we lower this keel below the ships hull.

Location of the drop keel in an example ship (the image is not Tridens) and position of the transducers. The transducer is the part of an echosounder that transmits and receives the sound pulses. The electrical transceiver, the computer and the interface are inside the vessel.

By using different frequencies we are able to distinguish between fish species to a certain extend. For example, blue whiting and horse mackerel are much better reflector at lower frequencies than mackerel. Mackerel and horse mackerel are two species we may encounter during the survey. For a good abundance estimation it is important to distinguish them from blue whiting.

Eric Armstrong during the calibration. The lower screen left, shows the winches with fishing lines that hold the calibration sphere in the right position.

Echogram during the calibration of the 38 kHz tranducer. The two pink/red bands just above the middle of the screen represent the recorded echoes from two metal spheres which are positioned approximately 1,5m from each other (the dark band underneath is the bottom). The upper sphere is used for the calibration of this frequency. The work is made difficult by fish schools (the dark red blobs) which swim very close to the upper sphere. They interfere with the measurements. We will have to remove some measurements before we calculate the correction factor.

On Wednesday 20:00 UTC we are ready with the calibration of the acoustic equipment. After that we sailed into deeper water to lower the new trawl cables and wind them tight on the winches. Next we tested our new trawl sonar system with camera. The idea is to be able to see live video of the fish being caught in the net. Unfortunately this does not function well. Therefore we will not use it during this survey.

On St. Patrick's day Friday 17 March at 15:00 UTC we enter the port of Cork. On our way, we pass Cobh.
Sailing along Cobh we hear the speaker of the St. Patrick's day parade which is about to begin.
