Leptocephalus

After haul 5 on Sunday evening March 21, we will sail further west at night. At 2:24 UTC at 52.47N-16.00W we turn north to the next transect. At 5:11 UTC we start the next transect eastwards at 53.15N-16.00W. At 7:33 UTC we fish for separate schools (haul 6). The catch is 800kg of blue whiting.

Trek 6, 22 maart 2021, 53.15N-15:22W, 800kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 6, 22 March 2021, 53.15N-15:22W, 800kg blue whiting.

After haul 6, we fish for the scattering layer that is visible on the echogram at over 200m. The previous haul with the Mik net yielded a monster with many crustaceans, especially amphipods. We expected that this time too. To our utter surprise, there are no crustaceans in the catch at all. Instead many specimens of a type of pteropod, Clio recurva and also Siphonophorae and Pyrosomida. The specimens of these two groups are transparent and barely visible in the sample. The most special species in the sample is a Leptocephalus larva, or an eel larva. We suspect that it is a congereel (Conger conger). This species spawns in the deep parts of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. As with the European eel - which spawns somewhere in the Sargasso Sea - the locations are not exactly known and no one has ever observed them spawning. So the question is where this Leptocephalus larva comes from.

- The plankton sample contains many siphonophores and pyrosomides. These are transparent and barely visible in the sample. The pteropods (Clio recurva) and a conger eel larva are clearly visible.

- The leptocephalus larva is estimated to be 12 cm long.

- The shape of the leptocephalus larva indicates that the species is a congereel (Conger conger).

More eastwards on the 53.15N transect, again on the west side of Porcupine Bank, we see large concentrations of blue whiting. There are also fishing vessels here, including Kings Bay, a Norwegian vessel that is also used for research. We shoot the net for haul 7 and catch 1000kg of blue whiting.

Op Porcupine Bank - On Porcupine Bank

Saturday evening March 20 at 22:36 UTC at the crossing of the western edge of Porcupine Bank we shot the net for concentrations of blue whiting for migration 3. The catch was blue whiting and was otherwise very similar to the previous migration. Remarkable were the echoes on the surface, which are especially strong on the echograms of 38 and 70 kHz and are completely absent on those of 18 kHz. We suspect that these echoes are caused by small gas bubbles that remain in the phytoplankton mucus layer.

Trek 3, 20 maart 2021, 52.18N-14.48W, 3500kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 3, 20 maart 2021, 52.18N-14.48W, 3500kg blue whiting.

After trek 3 we sailed further east. We turned north on the Bank at 7:07 UTC at 52.18N-13.30W and started the next westbound transect at 52.46N-13.30W at 9:47. On the Bank - at this spot the depth is 220m - we shot the net at 10:42 UTC for haul 4 on schools on and above the bottom. The catch consists of blue whiting. Most specimens are about 17-18 cm.

Boegsurfers - Bowsurfers

After haul 1 on March 19, we continue sailing east in the evening and at 21:52 UTC we turn north at 51.22N-13.30E to the next transect. On the morning of Saturday March 20 at 7:24 UTC, we see a thick layer of blue whiting on the echogram as we leave Porcupine Bank, on the west side. Because this is a N2000 nature reserve and we are not quite sure if our permits allow us to fish pelagically here, we only set the net after we have left the area. The catch consists of blue whiting, as expected.

Trek 2, 20 maart 2021, 51.49.30N-15.07.02W, 2800kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 2, 20 March, 51.49.30N-15.07.02W, 2800kg blue whiting.

The lower one is a male which can be recognized by an elongated light organ, that is missing in the female.

After haul 2 we sail further west. At 2:55 PM we turn north at 51.51N-16.00W to the next transect. We call the pieces between research transects "inter-transects". These are not taken into account when making the stock estimate, because they run parallel to the depth lines. The stock estimate would be too much determined by the fish concentrations at these depths if the inter-transects were included. The inter-transects give us the opportunity to experiment and solve problems with the acoustic equipment. While we are looking for an electronic interference on the 38kHz echogram, the message comes from the bridge that dolphins can be seen.

- About 15 common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) are ahead. They mainly try to let themselves be pushed by the bow wave: they surf, as it were, on the bow wave.

De blauwe wijting survey 2021 is van start gegaan - The blue whiting survey 2021 has started

The fisheries research vessel Tridens left the port of Scheveningen on Tuesday March 16 at 13:00 UTC for the annual blue whiting survey. The last episode of this fisheries survey was in 2019. The 2020 survey was canceled at the last minute due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The purpose of the blue whiting survey is to make a stock estimate of blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou). The stock is in the area west of Ireland during the spawning period from mid-March to the end of April, mainly near Porcupine Bank. Blue whiting is not very well known by the Dutch, yet it is by weight, together with herring, the most caught fish species in the Dutch fishery.

Normally, the Tridens has a team of fisheries researchers from different countries on board. This year the team consists exclusively of Dutch researchers. In connection with the Covid pandemic, it was not considered responsible for researchers from neighboring countries to travel to Scheveningen.

De Tridens verlaat de haven van Scheveningen. - Tridens departs from the port of Scheveningen.

- Tom Bangma en Thomas Smith are looking forward to a nice research trip.

Normally, this journey begins with a calibration of the acoustic equipment prior to the actual recording of the abundance by sailing transects. However, because we leave a day later than expected and governmental department of Rijkswaterstaat has scheduled a 72-hour interruption halfway through the survey, we decide to go straight to the starting point of the planned transects and to perform the calibration later during the survey.

- These are the planned transects. The black parts will not be used for the abundance estimation of the stock.

Tridens starts 18 March at 17:35 UTC at 51.05.32N-13.29.46W on the most southern transect in western direction. During the remainder of that day we do not see recordings of fish schools.

On Friday 19 March at 15:58 UTC, on Porcupine Bank, we decide to shoot the net for a thin blue layer at the seafloor. The catch consists of blue whiting mixed with some lanternfishes and greater argentine.

Trek 1, 19 maart 2021, 51.21.38N-14.06.81W, 410kg blauwe wijting, 45kg grote zilversmelt en 30kg Kroeyer's lantaarnvis (Notoscopelus kroyeri). - Haul 1, 19 March 2021, 51.21.38N-14.06.81W, 410kg blue whiting, 45kg Greater argentine and approximately 30kg of lancetfish (Notoscopelus kroyeri).

Rendezvousvis (Polymetme corythaeola) - Rendezvous fish (Polymetme corythaeola)

In addition to research into blue whiting, we also pay attention to other fish species and animal groups in the ecosystem. In the area we often see a layer at a depth of about 150m on the echogram. Fishing  with the large pelagic net in previous years provided little information, because the mesh size of this net is too large. That is why we will take a number of samples during this trip with a towed plankton net, a so-called MIK net. This net has a diameter of 2m and a mesh size of half a millimeter.

- Shortly after haul 1 the scattering layer at approximately 150m can be seen.

- Immediately after the first fish haul, at the same location, we take a sample with the MIK net by towing it for 20 minutes at approximately 150m. Here it just emerges.

De ware Alfonsino en een stukje reus - The real Alfonsino and a piece of giant

The deep haul 9 marked the western most position in our survey. Originally we meant to cover two transects over Rockall, but we had to skip that plan due to our material bad luck earlier. Now we sail east to 55.04N-13.59W where we change course at midnight (UTC) and sail 24 nautical miles to the southwest. On 31 March 3:10 UTC we arrive at the next transect (54.46N-14.24W) en set course to the east again. As we arrive at approximately 18:00 (UTC) at the continental slope, a thick layer of blue whiting appears on the echogram. We shoot the net for haul 9.
Trek 9, 31 maart 2019, 54.48N-10.44W, 3000kg blauwe wijting. - Haul 9, 31 March 2019, 54.48N-10.44W, 3000kg blue whiting.
Now it is time for a confession. For years we sometimes catch individuals of Alfonsino (Beryx sp.), a beautiful bright orange coloured fish. There are two species of this genus in the area: Beryx decadactylus and Beryx splendens. In the past we (must have) identified some specimens as B. decadactylus. After that we assumed a bit too easy that all the Beryxes were of that species. In haul 9 we catch another Beryx and look at it more thorough: it turns out to be a specimen of B. splendens. With hindsight we suspect that many of earlier caught specimens were misidentified as B. decadactylus. The English name of B. splendens is Splendid Alfonsino or Beryx.

- In the catch of haul 9: Splendid Alfonsino or Beryx (Beryx splendens).
There is something else in the catch of haul 9 that is cause for some excitement: a piece of cephalopod with gelatinous consistency. This belongs to the giant seven-arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus). This species has eight arms, but one of them is rolled op in a body crevice. This arm is used for mating. The females of this deepsea species can grow as big as three meter. They seem to feed on... jellyfish (see this study). Actually this is not the first time we find this species in the catch. Also on deck of pelagic trawlers pieces of this species can be found on the aft deck: most likely an individual is picked of in the large meshes of the front part of the net and breaks in pieces due to the force caused by towing the gear through the water.

- Piece of a giant: the seven-arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus).
- Mystery: a  frog spawn like substance found on the aft deck during hauling. Most likely colonial Tunicata: Thaliacea (Pyrosoma?). Unlike their bentic relatives, the Ascidians, these animals lives in open water. Found on deck by crew member Ton Meijer.
Vergroot: zich ontwikkelende vislarven? - Close up: developing fish larvae?
