Koraal - Coral

As there is there is no blue whitng on the echogram, we decide to carry out another deepwater haul, haul 14 in the vicinity of Rosemary's bank. During shooting of the net, echoes of blue whiting appear!

Trek 14, 1 april 2017, 59.35N-10.01W, 500kg blauwe wijting - Haul 14, 1 April 2017, 59.35N-10.01W, 500kg blue whiting

Trek 14, vissen langs de helling van Rosemary's Bank - Haul 14, fishing at the slope of Rosemary's Bank
We have bad luck during this haul. The slope is steeper than anticipated and the lower part of the frontal part of the trawl becomes heavily damaged. There is even a piece of coldwater coral stuck in the large meshes of the frontal net.

This trawl net cannot be used anymore during this trip. As we intend to fish once more before the end of the last transect, the crew makes the spare net ready for operation.

- The net has touched the bottom causing damage. A piece of coral is another indication that the net was at the bottom

- In order to avoid becoming crushed as the net is being hoisted over the rolling rear frame, Thomas picks it out in time.
We certainly do not mean to catch deep-water coral during this fish survey. It takes thousands of years to grow a branch like this. Fortunately a bycatch like this is very rare when fishing with a pelagic trawl. For cruiseleader Bram this is the first time in 25 years of sea going fisheries research that he sees deep-water coral.

In a thicker part of the coral branch, a little squat lobster (Galatheidae) tries to hide itself
Op een ander stuk koraal (of poliepenkolonie) zitten grote zeepokken en een spons, met daarin wormen en schelpen - Attached on second piece of coral (or poly colony) are sea barnacles and a spong, which holds worms and little shells

The catch consists of 500kg of blue whiting. Like earlier catches, these catch have other species as well, black scabbardfish to start with - amidst these, we find a specimen which looks very similar but belongs to another species (see pictures) - and three differnt deepsea-sharks with green eyes.

The internationale survey is almost finished. We expect to arrive at the end of this last transect tomorrow morning (Sunday 2 April). This convenient, because there is a gale warning: now we can take shelter in a Scottish Loch.

Zalmharing en meer - Pearlside and more

On Tridens, more is happening than research alone. For example, every day high quality meals are being prepared by the men in the galley, Chris Bosman and Piet Kraaijenoord.

In the night from 29 to 30 March we sail to the north in the direction of the next transect (58.16N) to shot the net at for haul 12 at the shelf edge.
During hauling of the net in haul 12, the codend is drifting. This is caused by the increase of the volume of the gas in the swimbladder. The fish is from 500m depth and the pressure decrease when getting closer to the surface

Trek 12, 30 Maart 2017, 58.16N-9.38W, 2900kg blauwe wijting - Haul 12, 30 March 2017, 58.16N-9.38W, 2900 kg blue whiting

On the transect in the west that follow now, we do not see blue whiting recordings on the echogram. On Friday morning 31 march we decide to fish anyway at 58.56N-15.19W. This time not at 450m where we normally find the blue whiting, but in the so called "scattering layer" at 150-200m. This layer is present in the deep water of the whole survey area. There is more plankton and - may be - also fish or squid which may be attracted by it.

Trek 13, 31 maart 2017, 58.56N-15.19W. Gevist op 150-175m: geen vangst, wel lichtend sprotje in de mazen van het net en op het achterdek - Haul 13, 31 March 2017, 58.56N-15.19W. Fished at 150-175m: no catch, but pearlside sticked in the meshes and scattered specimens on the rear deck
After the net has been hauled, the codend appears to be empty. But what has been causing these echoes? The answer is scattered here and there on the rear deck: tiny little fishes. The species is pearlside. They are so small that they disappear through the large meshes in the front net immediately after entering the net. And even the few individuals that reach the rear are slipping through the meshes of the codend because even these are too large (4 cm stretched mesh size). Some of the fishes may got stuck in the meshes and drop on deck during hauling.

During the survey we carry out a hydrographical measurement with a CTD, which we lower with constant speed down to 1000m (or less if it is not that deep). A CTD records rapidly consecutive measurements of depth, temperature and salinity.

On the screen of the CTD computer a graph is produced. The lines are double, because the measurements continue as the CTD is hoisted up again. Only the data from the downcast are kept.

In the evening we arrive again at the edge of the continental shelf. The amount blue whiting in the layer at about 450m increases again. We shoot the net at 19:00 UTC, 50 miles from St. Kilda. We are not the only one, because 8 trawlers - mostly Norwegian - are fishing here as well. The difference is that these commercial vessel fish close against the shelf edge while the depth at our position (57.36N-10.10W) about 900m is.

- While Tridens is shooting the net for haul 11, 50 nm from St. Kilda, 8 Norwegian trawlers are fishing along the shelf edge
Fortunately the trawlsonar - which had a little hick up during our last haul - is performing excellent again! The catch consists of , surprise, surprise .... blue whiting.

Nieuw persoonlijk record diep vissen Tridens - Nieuw personal record deep fishing for Tridens

On 27 and 28 March we sail two transects across Rockall Bank. Like expected, there is hardly any blue whiting around here. The reason the area around Rockall is covered during the international survey, is that we know from experience that there might be a significant amont of blue whiting in some years. In the absence of blue whiting we carry out a deep haul at the bottom.

This haul we establish a personal record deep fishing for Tridens! For the first time ever on board Tridens the net is lowered deeper than 1000m. The bottom rope is towed just above the bottom at approximately 1100m. As there are no recordings of fish to be seen and we really like to catch something, we pull the pelagic(!) trawl as close to the bottom as we dare. The new cables, which we winded on the winches at the beginning of this journey, are veered out to 1700m.

Echogram tijdens trek 9, 28 maart 2017, 57.26N-15.36W. We hebben vlak boven de bodem gevist - Echogram during haul 9, 28 March 2017, 57.26N-15.36W. We fished just above the bottom.

Schipper Kinne Reichgeld en reisleider Bram Couperus zijn tevreden over het nieuwe diepte record voor Tridens - Captain Kinne Reichgeld and cruiseleader Bram Couperus are pleased with the new personal depth record for Tridens

Shooting and hauling of the pelagic trawl takes forever: about two times one hour. All together, the crew spends 3 and a half hour carrying out this haul.

Here the front part is coming on board. The mesh size of the front meshes is about 8m. Towards the codend, the meshes become gradually smaller. In the codend, the stretched meshsize is 4 cm
The catch is a treat: one and a half basket of weird and beautiful looking fish- and squid species.

On wednesday morning 29 March, we are on the 57.36N transect heading in the direction of St. Kilda. Last night we have been sailing past Rockall.

Voortgang woensdagochtend 29 maart om 9:00 UTC - Progress woensdagochtend 29 March at 9:00 UTC
The next day - wednesday 29 March - the eastern wind has increased. This does not withhold us from shooting the net for blue whiting schools at 500m depth at 12:00 UTC, 57.36N-11.09W along the edge of Anton Dohrn Seamount. The catch consists of 75 kg small sized blue whiting.
